Job Description

The Families and Workers Fund (FWF) seeks a Program Manager to join our team. This role is part of our Program Team and reports to the Executive Director.

The Program Manager will provide programmatic and project management support; assist in the design and annual data collection of our measurement, learning, and evaluation practice; and contribute to and steward our small and medium-sized business work. The Program Manager will display a deep commitment to equity and is both a strategic thinker and collaborative operator. A key part of this role is supporting our program team to build capacity to increase our impact. The Program Manager will be organized with strong attention to detail and capable of effectively prioritizing and actioning a heavy stream of inbound requests. As a rapidly growing startup with an ambitious vision, all of our staff must be comfortable with change and actively seek to help each other.

Application Deadline & Requirements

As a start-up, FWF is growing quickly and seeking to staff the team quickly and thoughtfully. Deadline for applications is June 27th with an anticipated start date of July 31st. Applications submitted without completing the application questions will not be reviewed.

About the Families and Workers Fund

The Families and Workers Fund (FWF) is a platform for collaborative action and a pooled $65 million+ fund supported by 25 diverse funders working together to build a more equitable economy that uplifts all. FWF was founded on the belief that the United States is experiencing a once-in-a-generation opening to advance economic security, opportunity, and mobility—especially for those who have been most locked out of the country’s prosperity. FWF deploys strategic and nimble grants, as well as targeted programs, community engagement, and partnerships, to leverage the possibility of this moment toward three longer-term impact goals:

  • Activate Philanthropy: Catalyze strategic collaboration in philanthropy to advance a more equitable economy and grow the total amount of resources committed to good jobs and economic opportunity.
  • Recover Up: Leverage new federal and employer investments and momentum to accelerate the delivery of career pathways and quality jobs to struggling workers.
  • 21st Century Benefits: Reimagine and repair the public benefits systems—in particular, unemployment insurance and other benefits that help to propel economic security and mobility—by supporting the introduction of new technologies, delivery models, and policies to improve efficacy and access, and end racial, gender, and other disparities.

Across all of FWF’s work, the team prioritizes equity and dignity—i.e., ensuring an approach is designed for and with the most impacted communities and centers their voices and leadership—as well as implementation excellence and potential for scale. This enables FWF to work in ways that are both people-driven and data-driven and to break down silos. FWF supports grantees that share its values of equity and are also relentlessly focused on scale, such as by investing in strong tech systems, sustainable financial models, and healthy teams.

Key Responsibilities (include but not limited to):

  • Manages implementation of a multi-partner, large-scale project on small and medium-sized business (SMBs): Working closely with the Recover Up Program Director and in collaboration with our close partners, manages our good jobs work that focuses on SMBs. Builds effective timelines/processes for deliverables, plans for and tracks a large budget, and coordinates resources needed to deliver. Contributes to scoping prospective grantees and partnerships within the project. Manages a project-based consultant as assigned.
  • Supports grantmaking and grantee partners: As requested, contributes to assessing new potential grantees or partners, including by analyzing key dimensions of the organization being considered for funding (e.g., the organization’s impact strategy, leadership, financial size, potential risks, etc). Supports grantees in data collection.
  • Contributes to external communications: Contributes to drafting, formatting, and editing grantmaking memos, external presentations, and other materials about the Fund’s program strategy and/or impacts. Drafts field research, briefings, and presentations on key issues impacting our work and opportunities. Occasionally interacts with co-funders. Presents program updates and MEL results at Advisory Board and/or other funder meetings.
  • Leads and manages measurement, evaluation, and learning (MEL) practice: In close partnership with a Program Director and with support from an MEL consultant, designs, implements, and executes our organization’s MEL practice to measure the outcomes and impacts of our grants and programmatic work. Synthesizes qualitative and basic quantitative data from surveys, meetings, and other sources to produce aggregated, fund-level outcomes and insights in high-quality written documents and presentations. Communicates key learnings and outcomes to staff, co-funders, and other key stakeholders. Helps to manage the Fund’s relationship with the MLE consultant as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned: Participates in various other Program Team activities and special projects as needed, including special projects that may have tight deadlines or involve complex, high-stakes partnerships. Contribute to and participate in organization-wide activities, conferences, and retreats.

Minimum Requirements

  • Strong applied research and data management and analysis skills with exceptional attention to detail. Proficiency with research, data collection, literature reviews, analysis, and reporting, including synthesizing research, leading grantee monitoring data collection, and analysis and reviewing and reporting analysis.
  • Comfort working in a startup environment with many competing priorities, deadlines, and workstreams.
  • Team player with an ability to work collaboratively and build effective relationships among a variety of levels and a diverse group of individuals and team; is inclusive and considers who may need to be a part of an initiative who may not be present or considered
  • Shares FWF’s deep commitment to equity; values and seeks to advance equity in the workplace including racial and gender equity.
