Job Description

The Program Coordinator for Gender Diversity is part of the Office of Health and Wellness and, in partnership with the K.C. Potter Center for LGBTQI Life at Vanderbilt University, serves as a key contributor responsible for programs, events, and leadership initiatives within the office. This position works with campus and community partners to design, coordinate, and deliver events and initiatives related to transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse identities, health equity, and social justice broadly for the Vanderbilt community. In addition, the Program Coordinator will engage in meaningful and supportive conversations with transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse individuals in the community and their allies. The Program Coordinator also serves as an advisor and/or liaison to LGBTQI+ organizations on campus and provides relevant resource referrals to Vanderbilt community members. Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Health and Wellness with a dotted line to the Director of LGBTQI Life, the Program Coordinator collaborates most frequently with the team members in the Office of Health and Wellness and professional and student staff within LGBTQI Life, as well the other offices working on equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives.

The Office of Health and Wellness serves a central role in leading a coordinated effort to promote health and wellness within the University. The office works in collaboration with stakeholders across the organization, including, but not limited to, Student Affairs, Faculty Affairs, and Human Resources. It also provides expertise and advisement on strategic direction for all health and wellness activities for faculty, staff, postdocs and students. An important objective of the office is to promote health equity, inclusion, and belonging for all members of the Vanderbilt community.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide information about campus and community resources, support, and referrals to Vanderbilt affiliates to facilitate a successful and affirming experience at the University.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Execute programming in a coordinated and logistically sound manner in order to maximize impact, including, but not limited to, securing reservations and catering, developing marketing materials and timelines, submitting events to relevant calendars, and developing relevant assessments.
  • Manage programming for Transgender Day of Remembrance and Resilience, Trans and Non-Binary Author Series, and relevant affinity groups, and assists with programming for National Coming Out Day.
  • Engage students, faculty, staff, and post-docs in fostering an inclusive culture, and ensure a thriving and collegial community for transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse individuals by providing access to cultural and communal resources.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on the experiences, challenges, and hopes of transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse individuals for the Office of Health and Wellness and other areas of the university, including by providing consultative services and creating shared knowledge and understanding for campus partners.
  • Using a gender-affirmative care model (GACM), serve as the first point of contact for transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse individuals (faculty, staff, postdocs, and students) who need assistance and support.
  • Integrate into the LGBTQI Life team, including attendance at staff meetings, meetings with the Director of LGBTQI Life, participation in programs and events, and, at minimum, 20 in-person hours a week at the K.C. Potter Center.
  • Develop creative and collaborative programming that is educationally sound, intersectional in nature, and speaks to the lived experiences of LGBTQI+ community members.
  • Maintain relationships with community partners and facilitate institutional efforts involving faculty, staff, students, and post-docs focused on community-building within the University and the city, state, and region.
  • Maintain an understanding of institutional and departmental financial policies related to areas such as travel, procurement, expense, and time reporting to ensure compliance and proper stewardship of University resources.
  • Engage in unbiased conversations with transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse individuals and their allies in need of all forms or assistance and support.
  • Serve on institutional committees and working groups to enrich the experience and resources available to the transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse community.
  • In collaboration with K.C. Potter Center, Student Affairs, and Marketing and Communications, utilize office listservs, social media accounts, and marketing materials to tell a compelling and accurate story of the work of transgender, nonbinary, and gender-diverse life at Vanderbilt in order to drive engagement.
  • Work in collaboration with key partners in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for People, Culture, and Belonging, Faculty Affairs, Student Affairs, LGBTQ+ Policy Lab, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Vanderbilt University Public Safety, and more.
  • Explain the University’s critical support funds and assist individuals with completion of necessary paperwork.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of two years work experience in a related field is preferred.
  • Ability to successfully work with minimum supervision, and exercise independent thinking and judgement.
  • Extensive knowledge of transgender and non-binary communities and their needs both in and outside of a higher education environment is required.
  • A bachelor’s degree is required, though a master’s degree is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent at engaging in unbiased and meaningful conversations.
  • Experience coordinating programs and initiatives related to sexuality, gender identity, and/or social justice broadly is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent at managing multiple tasks, proven capabilities to meet deadlines and strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent communications skills that promote teamwork and collaboration. Takes a team-oriented, collaborative approach to all things.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
