Job Description
Summary Of Position


Mainstream Living provides services designed to enhance opportunities, create success and fulfill dreams. All personnel are expected to promote a safe and welcoming environment that inspires hope and supports others with their individual goals and aspirations. The President/CEO provides overall direction and leadership for Mainstream Living and facilitates optimum interaction between the Board of Directors and Mainstream Living's management and personnel, thereby enabling the Board to fulfill its governance function. This person shall work diligently to incorporate the spirit and intent of the mission of the organization into daily work.


Qualifications And Skills


Education: Minimum requirement of a Bachelor’s degree in sociology, social work, psychology, business, health services, public administration or related field is required.


Experience: Minimum of five years of executive “C suite” level leadership experience is required. Minimum of 10 years supervisory/management experience in the field of human services is required, preferably in a multi disciplined agency serving both persons with mental illness and those with intellectual disabilities.


Experience with accreditation and licensure activities, particularly with (CARF), is desirable. Experience working with Iowa’s Managed Care Organization (MCO) is desirable.


Experience with case management, theoretical and therapeutic methods, residential and vocational programming for members is preferred. Grant writing, foundation and private sector fundraising knowledge/experience is desired.


Driving: This position requires possession of valid Driver’s License, legal driving privileges and ability in the State of Iowa and qualification with Mainstream Living’s underwriter as an insurable driver.


Computer: Proficient with use of word processing and database software including but not limited to data entry, spreadsheet creation and interpretation, Google software products, excel, and ADP.


General: All employees must work diligently to incorporate the spirit and intent of the Mainstream Living's mission, vision and values. This includes respectful communication to all others at all times. Employees must be able to establish a rapport and develop positive relationships with others while conducting themselves in accordance with Mainstream Living's Code of Ethics. Employees must also demonstrate consistent professional conduct and establish and maintain appropriate boundaries with others; take accountability for own work while demonstrating a willingness to accept responsibility and offer constructive recommendations; demonstrate dependability and flexibility when shift times or duties of the day change; apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form; and ensure that the best interest of the company and members are a top priority at all times.


The President and CEO must have strong leadership skills paired with working knowledge of applicable laws and regulatory guidelines for business administration, service delivery requirements, and employee relations and member services. Must have the ability to effectively present information and strategic vision to top management, community groups and effectively work with partner organizations within the disability community. The President and CEO works directly for the Board of Directors, and maintains a vital communication role between the Board of Directors and Mainstream Living, Inc. and the general public.


The President and CEO functions as the President of the Mainstream Living Board of Directors, and as the CEO for Mainstream Living. This position requires excellent communication skills with the ability to listen effectively, respond appropriately, and maintain mutual comfort level while relating to diversity. Must have the ability to plan, develop and monitor a prescribed budget which requires the utilization of basic and complex mathematical and statistical skills. Must have the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Have the ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.


This individual must be a stable, mature, professional person capable of working in stressful situations. Must possess excellent judgment in crisis situations and demonstrate the same. Must be flexible and able to collaborate with the team to develop strategies and systems that resolve problems. Must be able to objectively examine situations and determine appropriate courses of action. Must be simultaneously visionary yet have the capacity to be strategically focused.


Essential Duties And Responsibilities


This position is considered an essential health care worker position and in the event of an emergency may be required to work one-on-one with members to ensure their safety.


Supervisory Responsibilities


  • Manage and supervise members of the Executive Management Team and all related business functions for all departments within the organization.
  • Directly supervises the Director of Communications and the Information Systems Manager


Planning


  • Stays current with proposed legislation (national, state and local) and conducts advocacy efforts on behalf of the organization and members served.
  • Stays current with respect to industry changes and challenges, and effectively communicates significant issues with respect to industry change.
  • Sees that there is an effective management team in place, with provision for succession.
  • Maintains a continuous awareness of the emerging needs of member populations and takes appropriate action to meet those needs, given resources and funding available for operations.
  • Stays current with changes in management, law and regulations governing nonprofit operations and service to those with disabilities.
  • In conjunction with the Board of Directors, the President and CEO assures long-range agency-wide planning that is consistent with Mainstream Living's mission, philosophy and strategy, working with the Board of Directors, agency management and personnel.


Controlling, Direction, Organization :
  • Ensures the use of sound financial management procedures, including the use of financial records which comply with accepted accounting standards for nonprofit corporations.
  • Assures development and implementation of quality assurance systems which demonstrate cost effectiveness of programs as well as impact on persons served.
  • Monitors progress toward Mainstream Living's goals and objectives and evaluates overall results and outcomes.
  • Oversees grant procurement from both public and private funding.
  • Ensures corporate compliance, corporate citizenship and effective leadership of the organization.
  • Assures development and implementation of personnel training and development plans and programs which provide the human resources necessary for the achievement of Mainstream Living's mission.
  • Manages the agency so that services provided to members are effective and in line with budget and ensures the highest degree of professional standards and practices in all services and programs.
  • Ensures that Mainstream Living's programs operate in compliance with applicable laws, guidelines and regulations.
  • Formulates and administers all major policies, as approved and directed by the Board of Directors.


Human Relations


  • Services as chief spokesperson for the agency and advocates for the needs of all members.
  • Develops and implements an ongoing public relations/marketing program to assure Mainstream Living's programs are understood by the human services community and public as a whole.
  • Promotes the recruitment and retention of adequate direct support professionals (DSPs), and other staff as necessary to meet the needs of the organization.
  • Sees that the Board of Directors is kept fully informed on the condition of the agency and on all important factors influencing it.
  • Maintains an organizational culture which attracts, keeps and motivates top-quality people at all levels.


Adherence To Policies And Procedures


All employees will adhere to Mainstream Living's policies and procedures including but not limited to:
  • Personnel Policies and Policy manuals.
  • Follow vehicle policies for safe operation of Mainstream Living's vehicles and safe transport of members/others if in driving position.
  • Keep Board (Chair) informed of critical and non-routine events. Communication is constructive, effective, and timely.
  • Follow documentation procedures to include accurate, honest and timely completion.
  • Follow health and safety practices per Mainstream Living's policies including participation in emergency procedures, drills, proper infection control, accident/injury prevention, etc.
  • Attend and work shifts as scheduled. Adhere to Mainstream Living's Attendance Policies for time off, on-call and attendance to training/staff meetings.


REPORTING AND SUPERVISION


The President/CEO is selected by, and reports to the Board of Directors. The Board Chair serves as liaison between the full Board and President/CEO and provides overall supervision and guidance. A written performance evaluation is prepared by the Board Chair annually, based on input from the full Board and reviewed by the Executive Committee. The Executive Committee will discuss the results of the evaluation with the President/CEO.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

Physical Demands: While performing this job, employees must be able to meet the physical demands required to complete essential functions of this position and meet member needs in their home environment. Employees will be required to lift 15-25 pounds on a frequent basis. Depending on other assigned duties, there may be times the employee may lift up to 50lbs and rarely up to 100lbs.


OSHA CLASSIFICATION


This position is considered a Classification II in regard to jobs in which required tasks


do not routinely involve a potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids, tissues or potential spills or splashes, but exposure or potential exposure may result from unplanned tasks or contact with unanticipated presence of infectious material that are required as a condition of employment. Additionally, there is possible exposure to cleaning chemicals. Use of appropriate measures is required for every health care provider.
