Job Description

Join the Advanced Light Source (ALS) Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBNL) as a Postdoc for ARPES Spectromicroscopy for Quantum Systems. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the study of materials for quantum systems, bridging the gap between fundamental science and real-world quantum computing. You will be part of the Quantum Systems Accelerator (QSA), a cutting-edge, multi-laboratory quantum research center funded by the Department of Energy. As a member of the ALS team, you will collaborate directly with Quantum Materials Research and Development Thrust Area scientists and other QSA researchers.

The Advanced Light Source is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard x-ray, and infrared regimes attract nearly 1,700 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 11,000 users annually. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large-scale upgrade (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art x-ray capabilities. It's an exciting time to join our team!

What You Will Do:

  • Utilize ARPES band structure mapping, electron- and x-ray-microdiffraction, and statistical methods to quantify heterogeneity and electron coherence in 2D and topological materials for quantum information science.
  • Disseminate experimental and research results through publications in refereed journals.
  • Take an active role in coordinating project partners and fostering new connections within the project.
  • Develop and employ new techniques to apply current, fields, and strain to ARPES and other synchrotron techniques.
  • Write proposals for advanced instrumentation usage at ALS and other user facilities.
  • Foster a respectful and inclusive environment, valuing diversity in all interactions.
  • Present research findings via oral presentations at scientific meetings, conferences, and peer reviews.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, and health (ES&H) regulations and promote safe working practices.
  • Collaborate closely with scientists, engineers, and technical support staff at the ALS to conduct planned experiments.
  • Stay up to date with relevant policies and regulations, including LBNL and ALS conduct of operations and quality assurance procedures.

What is Required:

  • Proven track record of spatially-resolved chemical and valence band mapping using ARPES or related techniques, demonstrated by authored publications.
  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed international scientific journals, with extensive experience in the preparation and publication of scientific papers.
  • Interest in the application-driven studies of condensed matter physics for quantum systems.
  • PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related field.
  • General understanding of x-ray-based techniques (instrumentation, measurements, and interpretation), such as XPS, XAS/XMCD, and x-ray scattering.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with surface science sample preparation techniques.
  • Knowledge of low-temperature experimental methods.
  • Basic programming language skills.
  • Proficiency in sample preparation techniques, including epitaxial growth, micromechanical exfoliation, and micromechanical transfer for analysis of single layers and heterostructures or crystal growth.
  • Experience using x-ray spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, LEEM, and/or PEEM microscopy techniques.
  • Basic engineering design experience using CAD.

For full consideration, please apply by June 26, 2023. This position will remain open until filled.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 2 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.
  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.
  • The monthly salary range for this position is $6,936.00 - $7,747.00 and is expected to start at $6,936.00 or above. Postdoctoral positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. Each step represents one full year of completed post-Ph.D. postdoctoral and/or related research experience.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.

The core values of the ALS reflect a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
