Job Description
Vertex Pharmaceuticals is seeking a highly motivated research scientist to support early drug discovery in the Molecular & Cell Biology group in San Diego. The scientist will develop and validate translational, primary human lung cell models of and drive cross-functional efforts towards a drug discovery campaign. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in lung biology (e.g., lung development or lung injury), be well versed in primary cell culture and be able to communicate effectively with colleagues in pharmacology, protein sciences, and computational genomics. Day to day duties will include primary cell culture in 2D & 3D formats, model characterization and validation using mRNA and protein analyses as well as imaging techniques. The candidate requires excellent communication and organizational skills to succeed in a fast-paced, collaborative laboratory environment.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Keep appropriate experimental records and documentation and analyze the results.
  • Perform hands-on, laboratory-based experiments including immunoassay, qPCR, Western blot, and flow cytometry.
  • Keep current on scientific literature and attend relevant scientific meetings in order to apply new technologies and scientific principles.
  • Maintain growth of patients-derived cells and cell lines to generate organoids for use as preclinical model of human diseases.
  • Utilize creative thinking to interpret results and propose/implement new strategies to advance project decision.
  • Work in a highly matrixed team environment to advance key research activities.
  • Effectively communicate scientific results to internal and external audiences.
  • Manage project timeline and coordinate cross-departmental efforts as necessary.

Education and Experience:
  • Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, or related disciplines and 0-3 years of relevant post-doctoral employment experience, or
  • Experience in primary cell culture, particularly lung epithelial cells (HBE or AT2 cells)
  • Diligence and impeccable attention to detail
  • Masters Degree (or equivalent degree) in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, or related disciplines and 3+ years of relevant employment experience, or
  • Must have work experience in lung biology
  • Bachelors Degree (or equivalent degree) in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, or related disciplines and 6+ years of relevant employment experience
  • Experience with cell-based assay development and/or validation
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

Salary range: $97,760 - $146,640 annually
Disclosure Statement:
The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
