Job Description
As part of Cloud Infrastructure Business Group (CIBG), we develop and deliver a visionary new system for Clustered Operations workflow and transforming SDDC management in Cloud, On-premises, and VMware Cloud Foundation environments via Desired State Platform (DSP). DSP engine is essential to successful SDDC management and is on the path of active expansion to support a variety of solutions and configurations. CIBG is keen on sustainable growth and is in search of a senior engineer who is passionate about solving some of the most complex problems, developing great products and solutions and leading the team of software engineers through this significant transition in design and implementation for DSP-based features.

Role Summary:

We are looking for a strong software developer who is excited to join a team of software engineers in the exploration of product improvements and streamlining SDDC management via DSP, experimenting with ideas to address customer requests, solving problems, troubleshooting complex distributed systems, investing in security, enterprise readiness, stability, and scale, and ensuring our customers’ needs are met through new product features and enhancements. Apart from technical and leadership skills, the ideal candidate for this role will have the communication capabilities to evangelize and co-opt cross-functional teams in the company (and their leads) that are impacted and need to integrate with DSP designs. This ideal candidate would have the technical breadth and experience to understand the various complex systems that our designs interact with, and can utilize this background to propose, lead and execute on innovative new solutions for these complex problems.

Our team's philosophy has roots in Agile Programming methodology’s values and concepts like feedback, communication, empathy, and shared understanding. We value customer obsession, metrics-driven approach, and working at a sustainable pace. We are a collaborative bunch; from agile programming to 1-on-1 time with your manager, there is always a teammate there to lend a helping hand. Mentorship from senior talent is built right into our process.

The team is based in Palo Alto, California. We are flexible on location and schedule, but given our collaborative approach to working, we prefer candidates whose schedule overlaps considerably with those of their teammates.

In this Role, you will:

  • Balance strategic and tactical thinking in driving technical decisions and maximizing engineering investments, ensure alignment across teams and coordinate collaboration
  • Provide technical input to the team on design, engineering process, and technology choices
  • Be accountable for the technical decision making in product design and development, problem-solving exercises and working with the team on technical discussions and scoping, complexity of potential features
  • Work with other functions within the Company (such as Product Management, Technical Marketing, Documentation etc.) to convert customer/market requirements into viable product solutions
  • Engage with senior engineering leadership both within our Business Unit and across Business Units to guide them through the transmission and answer their questions as they arise
  • Coach, level-up your teammates and build a bench of engineers who could take on hard technical problems
  • Identify key risks and work with engineers on the team to mitigate or resolve them
  • Perform independent analysis on complex systems, synthesize relevant recommendations, and drive those recommendations to delivery

Skills & Experience:

Required

  • Expertise in the areas of distributed systems, databases, algorithms, data structures and object-oriented concepts
  • MS in Computer Science or similar/related fields
  • Broad technical background in client-server technologies, with an excellent understanding of the full software stack
  • Currently working in a technical or technical leadership role
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to seamlessly interact with technical/non-technical audiences
  • Excellent programming background at the systems level of the software stack with preferred language experience being in C++

Preferred

  • Programming experience in C, Python and Java
  • Knowledge of Networking and Storage fundamentals
  • Experience and understanding of virtualization concepts
  • Understanding of UI/UX requirements

For US based candidates, the annual pay range (OTE for commissioned roles; Salary for other roles) for this position is: $116,000 - $277,000. The actual offer will be based on the role, location, and individual candidate experience. Bonus, commission, and/or equity may be eligible for this position. VMware offers comprehensive benefits including, but not limited to: medical, dental, and vision plans, company paid holidays, paid sick leave, and vacation time. Additional benefits for this position can be found at https://benefits.vmware.com/.
