Job Description
At the targeted schools, AmeriCorps members will use a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) framework that includes self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. Members will use Character Building through Organized Play (CBOP) program which de-emphasizes traditional team sports in favor of Cooperative Games and Teambuilding Initiatives that require and encourage whole group participation regardless of physical ability. Members will be trained in appropriate tutoring programs for one-on-one and small group tutoring and will assist teachers with creating and implementing experiential learning opportunities. Members will also be trained in discipline models to help students learn there are positive and negative consequences for their actions and that they are accountable for their actions. Members help students learn problem solving skills, crisis management skills, and personal responsibility. Members will provide opportunities for independence, personal hygiene, camp chores, awareness of self and others, goal setting and development, cultural awareness, and appropriate peer and adult relationships. They will also lead Outdoor Living Skills and Environmental Awareness programs with a STEM focus at the camp. Members will provide quarterly Parent Meetings on communication skills, discipline, boundaries, resources and advocacy. Members also mentor the Counselors-In-Training (CITs), leveraged volunteers who are former campers selected based on integrity, team spirit, and positive participation. Campers look up to these teenage volunteer CITs who in turn look up to the members, hoping to serve in a similar capacity in the future. CIT volunteers serve alongside members throughout the summer camp weeks as they lead students to move outside of their comfort zones through camping in the woods, canoeing in the river, getting dirty in the garden, and working closely with peers on team projects.
