Position Description:

Tutors provide math tutoring in-person to elementary and middle school students. Tutors meet with students to clarify and review concepts in which development or acceleration is needed, explain processes, and help students grow academically and resolve academic challenges. The emphasis and content of the tutoring sessions are determined by the student’s goals and needs. Tutors work with colleagues and leadership to support their own professional development and growth.

Tutor Responsibilities:

  • Participate in coaching professional development activities to improve skills and continue to expand cultural competence
  • Provide direct assistance in the use of equipment, learning objects, and materials needed for student success
  • Use active listening strategies to allow student to determine content and pace of tutoring
  • Recognize and respect different learning styles and student preferences
  • Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences
  • Utilize feedback and reflection to improve practice
  • Provide student-centered instruction in subject-specific content
  • Recognize primary role to help students become more confident, more successful, self-directed learners
  • Be direct and kind towards students and school staff
  • Utilize listening and questioning strategies as the primary social-emotional method to identify student needs and monitor progress

Qualifications:

  • Previous teaching and/or tutoring experience preferred
  • No teacher certification is required.
  • Ability to work in-person Monday through Friday 8:30-3:30
  • Some college (Bachelor's degree preferred)
  • Reliable, compassionate, highly-skilled, motivated individual with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Candidates must have a passion for education and helping students excel.
  • Highly proficient in middle school math

Locations Needed: Over 20 elementary/middle schools within the Compton Unified School District

We require COVID vaccinations for all candidates who provide in-person tutoring. Weekly testing may also be required but accommodations are provided on the school campus to help our staff meet those requirements.
