Payroll Manager (Remote Option)

As Payroll Manager, you will work with the CPO and CFO in the creation, implementation, and successful management of Balsam Brands compensation and payroll platforms. You will supervise one payroll team member, serve as the key liaison with Balsam’s People Team as well as a third-party Payroll provider.

This position reports to the Senior Accounting Manager. This role can work remote from any U.S. state where Balsam Brands is currently setup as an employer, which includes: CA, CO, FL, GA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, MD, MA, MO, NJ, NC, OH, OR, PA, TN, TX, VA, and WA. This role can also work locally in our Redwood City, CA or Boise, ID office location. Our local teams work in a hybrid model, which includes two days in-office.

To ensure sufficient overlap with functional and cross-functional team members globally, some flexibility with this role's regular work schedule will be required. Most of our teams have overlap with early morning and/or early evening PST. Specific scheduling needs for this role will be discussed in the initial interview.

What You’ll Do

• Process semi-monthly payroll for multiple entities; multistate payroll for exempt and non-exempt employees
• Comprehensive knowledge of I-9 processes, rules, and regulations
• Work with benefits team to ensure that the payroll system accurately reflect Team member Benefits
• Assist with financial audit, 401(k) audit, and workers comp audit
• Supervise the maintenance of employee personnel files
• Generate and audit payroll reports (deductions, PTO accruals, LOA payments, etc)
• Identify and recommend updates to payroll processing software, systems, and procedures
• Respond to payroll and tax notices from federal, state, and local agencies
• Maintain and update payroll information (includes accurate and timely data entry into ADP payroll system)
• Audit/prepare benefit payments and reconcile the discrepancies
• Enforce federal, state, and local labor compliance by continually studying existing and new legislation
• Supervise employee and play a key role in their personal and professional development
• Promptly answer payroll inquiries from employees (resolve payroll discrepancies quickly)
• Ensure accurate and timely processing of payroll updates including new hires, terminations, change of assignments, leave of absence, status changes, and changes to pay rates
• Perform ad-hoc analysis and projects as requested
• Audit/prepare payroll journal entry upload to accounting system and prepare monthly reconciliation

What You Bring To The Table

• Associates Degree+ in Finance, Accounting, Business, or related field
• Proven ability to design, implement, and continuously optimize payroll processes, as well as internal controls, aimed at balancing operational risk, quality, and increased efficiencies
• Demonstrated strength with analytical and problem-solving skills, including advanced ability to analyze and present data
• CPP Certification preferred
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail and accuracy
• Proven strength with understanding and accurately interpreting payroll and global tax regulations
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
• 6+ years of experience in processing and reconciling payroll
• Proven ability to utilize payroll cloud applications; ADP preferred

Travel for remote team members: At Balsam Brands, we believe that time spent together, in-person, collaborating and building relationships is important to who we are. For our newest remote Brandits, we will arrange travel to one of our local offices in your first month of employment so you can meet and train with your new team in-person. You may also get to travel an additional 1 – 2 times a year for events such as team retreats, offsites, or learning and development opportunities.

The base pay range for this position is: $72,000 to $130,000. Where an individual falls within that range will vary based on several factors including geographic location and may vary depending on candidate qualifications and experience, applicable skills, and other job-related factors. We benchmark our pay ranges against current external data sources and regularly review compensation for our team members.
