Job Description

The nurse manager will oversee clinics in Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery, Thoracic Surgery and Vascular Surgery.
Ensures that quality services are provided. Implements clinical services using established standards of care in nursing practice. Collaborates with Nurse Administrator of Clinical Operations (NACO) and with other disciplines to provide effective and efficient clinical services. Participates in the development and monitoring of systems ensuring that patient needs and regulatory standards are met. Involves unit staff in decision -making. Assists with development and implementation of service-specific goals which are based on organizational and departmental goals. Promotes and maintains a safe, warm environment to be enjoyed by all customers. Personnel Management
Approves work schedules and oversees daily operations. Actively involved in planning and resolving staffing issues. Collaborates with NACO and with other disciplines to ensure continuity of care. Participates in the hiring process.
Participates in personnel coaching, counseling and performance appraisals. Responsible for new staff orientation.
Promotes a positive, motivating environment supportive of staff retention. Participates in the provision of professional growth and development of staff members
Conducts ongoing assessment of nursing services educational needs.
Facilitates service-based orientation and continuing education program.
Assures one or more individuals are accountable for the following:
1) Develops and conducts nursing orientation and education programs that enable nurses to acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to succeed in meeting their job requirements and hospital goals
2) Develops, organizes and oversees a successful unit specific orientation program for all clinical support staff.
3) Acts as the liaison/resource for the class learners on the unit(s)
4) Ensures that the manuals remains current .
5) Identifies unit preceptors.
6) Tailors continual development of preceptors based on orientation evaluations.
7) Meets with new employees and/or preceptors during orientation as often as needed.
8) Promotes social integration of each new employee to the unit staff and activities.
9) Facilitates the process of learners to assume responsibility for maintaining competency in practice
Uses both internal and external resources to meet educational needs.
Ensures that clinical support is consistent and congruent with established criteria for each position and/or level of advancement.
Creates an environment that promotes staff growth. Is fiscally responsible for the management of the units/services. Participates in decisions concerning financial aspects of the site to include monitoring clinic costs, determining cost of procedures, treatments, and services. Actively seeks value enhancement alternatives. Ensures that adequate supplies are available for quality nursing service. Collaborates with product evaluation, procurement, biomedical engineering and others to obtain additional equipment supplies for quality enhancement and cost containment. Provides opportunities for staff to participate in the formulation and maintenance of the unit’s budget. Provides leadership to achieve desired outcomes. Holds regularly scheduled staff meetings. Functions as a liaison between individuals and groups. Demonstrates effective communication skills in relating to staff, patients, families, visitors and other health care professionals. Assists in the development review, revision, dissemination, and implementation of BSOM policies and procedures. Has knowledge of and ensures compliance with institutional, state, federal and other regulatory agencies standards, rules regulations, policies and procedures. Encourages and assists staff to deal appropriately with conflict. Promotes innovative strategies and solutions. Negotiates and delegates appropriately and effectively within confines of roles. Sets clear expectations. Creates an environment that fosters growth in internal and external customer relations. Demonstrates accountability for personal and professional competency and growth. Formulates and meets personal and professional goals. Participates in continuing education workshops and seminars. Possesses clinical knowledge and skills that allow identification with and evaluation of clinical issues. Uses appropriate resources. Participates in professional organizations. Remains positive and flexible under stress.

The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University is affiliated with ECU Health Medical Center, which serves as its teaching hospital, as well as the flagship hospital for ECU Health.

Minimum Education/Experience
Graduation from a state-accredited school of registered nursing and three years of nursing experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Must have a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

License or Certification required by statute or regulation
State of North Carolina Registered Nursing License

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. Three years nursing experience which includes at least one year of supervisory or management experience in a nursing setting. Basic Life Support Certification. Ensure the provision of nursing care services in collaboration with other health professionals. Responsible for planning and comprehensive operations of departmental nursing unit(s) on a 24-hour basis. Current knowledge base of procedures, techniques, equipment, technical advances and regulatory agencies and standards within the field of Nursing. Ability to implement sound business and human resource management principles.

License or Certification required by the Department
State of North Carolina Registered Nursing License
