Position: Full-time Lecturer in Japanese Literature and Culture for the Academic Year 2023-24
Starting Date: August 2023
Minimum Qualifications:
1) An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) or ABD in Japanese, or in a closely related field, with a specialty in Japanese literature, culture, or related areas in Japanese Studies, from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required.
2) Native or near-native proficiency in both Japanese and English.
3) Demonstrated research focused on the field of Japanese literature, culture, or related areas in Japanese Studies.
4) Evidence of interest and ability to teach lower-division Japanese language courses, Japanese contemporary culture courses taught in English, and upper-division courses in Japanese language, literature, and/or culture.
5) Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students in a multicultural/multiethnic urban campus environment with a substantial population of first-generation students.
Duties:
The normal load for full-time lecturers is 15 units each semester (30 units per academic year). The successful candidate will teach lower-division and upper-division courses in Japanese culture, language, and literature, including contemporary culture courses taught in English. Primary teaching assignments will be inperson, but the position may also include online or hybrid course assignments. University service is not expected for this position.

Salary: Initial salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Department:
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree in Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish, as well as minors in Chinese, French, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. The Department also offers a Master of Arts degree in Spanish. Our goal is to offer every student the opportunity to learn a language in addition to their primary language in order to expand their world, build their cultural competency, and develop transferable professional skills.
