The Position:
Applications are being accepted for the position of Assistant Professor, Dance at San Diego City College beginning August 2023 (fall semester). The Assistant Professor of Dance is in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts and reports to the Dean of the School of the Arts, Humanities, Communications, and Telecommunications. The instructor will teach courses in the Dance Program.
One of three credit colleges in the San Diego Community College District, City College is an urban campus dedicated to Social Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. City College provides academic and vocational offerings to meet the needs of a diverse student population. The college is minutes away from the world-class San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, and Chicano Park.
While the current vacancy is at City College, applicants should understand that they are subject to assignment at any District facility at the option of the Chancellor.
Major Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the School Dean, or other assigned manager, the Assistant Professor, Dance will implement educational programs, courses, experiences, and services that will directly aid students in achieving educational objectives; maintain regular office hours; perform extensive advising of students; assist in curriculum development and planning; and participate extensively in professional development activities.
The instructor will teach courses in the Dance Program. Primary responsibilities of this position include supporting the department in program and curriculum development, directing and producing live dance performances, teaching classes across a broad spectrum of dance, including History of Dance, Choreography, Improvisation, Music for Dance, Production, Design, and genres of dance technique including Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop and Ethnic forms of dance, and other courses as assigned with in the dance curriculum, and contributing to the goals of the Department, School, Campus and District.
Classes may be taught on or off-campus in accordance with the San Diego Community College classification description. A typical weekly teaching load consists of 15-30 hours of lab/lecture courses/rehearsals and may include evenings and weekends.
The instructor will have knowledge of:
  • Labor market conditions and demographic composition of communitys population;
  • Districts policies, regulations, and educational plan;
  • Accepted principles, practices and trends of program served;
  • Requirements for academic subjects; students rights and code of conduct; and technical aspects of field of specialty.
  • Applicable sections of the California Education Code; community college history, mission and curricula;
  • Principles and techniques of teaching; and


Qualifications:
Masters in dance, physical education with a dance emphasis, or theater with dance emphasis, OR the equivalent.
Desired Qualifications:
The following are desired qualifications for the position:
  • Ability to teach dance courses in technique, history, choreography, improvisation, site specific dance, and production.
  • Ability to teach techniques courses focusing in at least two of the genres listed in Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop or Ethnic forms of dance.
  • Experience producing dance performances, including social media, production calendar, communications, costume assistance, lighting assistance, publicity design.
  • Evidence of use of technology in instruction as well as proficiency in using computers including learning delivery programs such as Canvas, and website design experience.
  • Experience in developing college curriculum.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • An understanding of recruitment and retainment strategies, outreach strategies with an emphasis on community partnerships.
  • Emphasis on community building within the dance program and connected to the campus culture.
  • Evidence of sensitivity to teaching students of under-served populations and potentially unsheltered students.
  • Demonstrated commitment to collegiality and experience working collaboratively with colleagues, staff, students, and community members in a variety of on and off-campus activities (dance productions, cross-disciplinary projects, academic committees, etc.)
  • Designing new methods for excellence in the dance program as it relates to the campus and district commitment to excellence in education and access to education.
  • Experience and/or knowledge in working with students of great diversity in economic, cultural, ethnic background, gender identity, and varying levels of physical and learning abilities.


Licenses:
Pay Information:
Class 1, Step A - Class 6, Step C ($6,301.36 - $8,490.72) per month based on the current AFT - College Faculty Tenured-Tenure Track Monthly Salary Schedule.
Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable.
The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 - Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code 87815, any required adjustment will be made within the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
