Join our team at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Advanced Light Source Division as a Material Specialist and help support cutting-edge scientific research. We are seeking a highly motivated individual to independently perform shipping, receiving, and warehousing services at the ALS-U Receiving Building and other Lab property locations. You will work under the direction of the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) Logistics Lead and report to the Senior Administrator for ALS Logistics/Facilities/Work Planning.
The ALS is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard x-ray, and infrared regimes attract more than 2,000 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 14,000 users annually. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large-scale upgrade (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art x-ray capabilities. Responsibilities:
- Implement efficient and effective department processes, policies, and procedures
- Ensure the ALS-U warehouse is clean and always well-organized
- Work closely with lab staff including shipping and receiving
- Off-load and inspect incoming shipments to ensure that material is addressed properly and all counts match the driver's manifest
- Ensure timely delivery of all incoming deliveries to the end recipient/location
- Assist in resolving vendor and Purchase order receipt problems
- Enforce and establish safety guidelines and promote a safe and healthy workplace daily
- Process notification receipts for material that is delivered directly to the requester and provide receipt status to requesters
- Prepare and arrange for package shipping under the guidance of the ALS-U Logistics Lead
- Transport orders/packages using lab vehicles
- Inspect, accept, and stage items per direction from ALS-U technical team and/or the Inventory and Mechanical Technician Leads
- Utilize the ALS-U project inventory management system (EZOI) to enter receipt information into the database and generate barcodes
- Proactively develop solutions for complex problems and recommend appropriate courses of action
- Operate a forklift during the unloading and loading of trucks containing sensitive research equipment
Requirements:
- Must possess a valid California Driver's license to operate a vehicle.
- Excellent communication and follow-up skills with demonstrated ability to interact professionally with a wide range of personnel, including scientific, technical, and skilled crafts
- Proven track record of safely shipping and receiving complex equipment and materials using both specialized and common carriers
- Ability to comfortably walk and climb stairs extensively and kneel and bend frequently while performing regular duties
- Intermediate level of computer knowledge using inventory management software, Jira, Microsoft Suite, Google Docs, and/or Smartsheets in a receiving and/or inventory control environment
- Experience with and knowledge of safety practices and principles in the workplace
- Demonstrated experience working independently, taking initiative, and handling multiple competing priorities while working with both internal and external contacts
- Strong organizational skills with a high level of attention to detail
- 4 years of directly related experience
Desired Qualifications:
- Familiarity with DOE and Federal Property Management Regulations, especially as they relate to the receipt of high-dollar value and/or sensitive material
- Undergraduate degree
- Current forklift operator certification from LBNL is desired (training/certification provided after hire if needed)
- Ability to apply laboratory policies and procedures to a variety of warehouse/shipping issues

- This position is expected to pay $24.63 - $30.84/hour, which fits within the full salary range of $24.63 - $41.61/hour for the Material Specialist. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
- This is a full time, 2 year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
