The State of New Hampshire, Department of Justice, Division of Legal Counsel, Civil Bureau, has a full-time vacancy for a Legal Assistant.
To coordinate and manage the Civil Bureau functions by supervising support staff and assisting attorneys while aiding the bureau chief in carrying out administrative functions.

18 Months of additional relevant experience = Associate's degree
36 Months of additional relevant experience = Bachelor's degree
54 Months of additional relevant experience = Master's degree
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Associate’s degree in business science with major study in legal science, business or legal stenography, paralegal studies or a related legal field. Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.
Experience: Five years experience as a legal secretary, paralegal or in an area, which provided experience with legal terminology. Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.
Responsibilities :
· Trains, supervises and disciplines secretaries and the clerk interviewer in the Civil Bureau, examines work assignments and assigns work priorities, ensures timely completion of work.
· Prepares briefs which includes proofreading, checking citations for correct format, preparation of tables of authorities and contents, oversees filing of briefs, notices of appeal and appendices thereto with the Court in compliance with court rules governing format, filing and service.
· Supervises the maintenance of pleadings and briefs form files, case files, and mail log to ensure the efficient operation of the bureau and to provide attorneys, paralegals and secretaries access to materials for use in drafting similar pleadings.
· Conducts research and evaluation of matters referred to the bureau to assist the bureau chief in case assignment, and maintenance of statistical data.
· Types pleadings, memoranda, and letters; transcribes interview tapes, and composes cover letters and basic pleadings to ensure the timely, accurate completion of documents.
· Receives, reviews, assigns, and monitors habeas corpus petitions ensuring court deadlines are met.
· Originates and implements policies and procedures to foster the efficient operation of the bureau.
· Oversees filing with the courts and service by sheriffs' departments of pleadings generated by bureau attorneys to ensure proper and timely submission of documents.
· Determines when files are to be archived, sends and maintains document lists for best utilization of office filing space. Organizes and maintains case files, research files, form files, and miscellaneous files to enable retrieval of documents.
· Enters data into the case management system and to determine cost recovery amounts.
· Maintains electronic contract log to ensure tracking and follow-up on all contracts submitted for approval.
· Researches court procedures in neighboring states to enable filing of court documents by an attorney representing a particular client agency from another state.
