Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, the OB/Surgical Tech performs patient care activities in the care of the Obstetrical Services patients undergoing cesarean and vaginal deliveries. The OBT knows the philosophy and objectives of the nursing department and supports these premises.
This position requires providing care/service to a newborn through childbearing age in a manner that demonstrates an understanding of the functional/developmental age of the individual serviced.
- Provides clerical support and services to meet specific needs of a nursing unit. Participates in and coordinates telecommunications between nursing and all departments. Is responsible for preparing, compiling and maintaining patient records. Coordinates maintenance of office supplies and forms PAR levels and nurse’s station. Communicates effectively with all customers and assures accurate maintenance of a patient’s medical record. Answers call lights in a timely manner. Transcribes orders efficiently/accurately.

- Basic hygiene and nursing care such as:
Feeding and bathing and oral Care, positioning, ambulating, bed linen changes, patient safety
measures
- Vital sign measurement and report to RN
- Report at bedside, count instruments and initial, date and time instrument form every shift if a table has already been opened.
- Obtaining/transporting of specimen
- Check OR to ensure it is readily available (suction, panda warmer, cesarean section tray)
- Check fluid warmer for expiration dates (include OR refrigerator fluids)
- QC for urinalysis machine done by PM shift, verified by AM shift
- Ensure that there is a Vaginal Instrument cart in every room
- Provides assistance in the Maternity Services Department following directions of Registered Nurses
- Provides Housekeeping support to maintain clean environment
- Follows appropriate procedure for entering patient charges
- Supports clinical practice standards
- Obtains basic training to assist RN in placing EFM on patients upon admission
- Obtains necessary training prior to initial equipment use
- Assures equipment is in operating order prior to use
- Uses equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s operating instructions
- Demonstrates knowledge of obstetric surgical procedures
- Anticipates needs for surgical cases
- Prepares equipment, supplies and instruments
- Passes instruments, sutures and supplies
- Maintains a correct sponge instruments and needle count both manual and with surgicount system
- Communicates information thoroughly and gives concise report at change of shift.
- Communicates appropriate information to Team Leaders, Manager, Director, etc. as appropriate.
- Writes neatly and legibly.
- Inputs data into the computer accurately.
- Reports all results of diagnostic studies and lab values as soon as received to the appropriate RN.
- Locates and retrieves data from the computer including laboratory, diagnostic imaging and other patient related information.
- Keeps census accurately updated on census log sheet.
- Answers Nurse Call
- Maintains a sufficient reserve (PAR) level of patient admission charts and charting forms.
- Answers Nurse Call system within < 3 minutes, notifies appropriate staff member and follows-up with patient to assure needs are met in a timely manner.
- Directs or takes healthcare team members, patients, visitors, physicians to desired destination in a helpful, courteous and caring manner.
- Assists with admissions, discharges, transfers, deaths, errands as required and/or directed.
- Uses the following equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s operating instructions, including but not limited to:
- Keeps Nurses’ Station, Operating rooms, labor rooms organized and neat at all times.
- Locates staff, supplies, etc. as needed by healthcare team members including physicians.
- Assembles patient charts, identifies forms accurately, enters appropriate information and maintains an ongoing check for proper identification and dating of forms.
- Checks and orders supplies at routine intervals and as needed (maintains adequate PAR levels).
- Maintains adequate stock of supplies in Operating rooms, labor rooms
- Assists patients, visitors, staff without hesitation; if unable to respond to request, seeks appropriate staff member capable of accommodating needs.
- Notifies appropriate staff to receive telephone calls.
- Checks for and assures patients are properly identified (ID bands, addressograph, etc.) on admission/transfer and as required/requested.
- Receives and places telephone calls to all hospital departments as needed/requested.
- Contacts Environmental Services for unit cleaning needs and for bed/ room cleaning post-discharge.
- Initiates and follows through with requests for services to effect patient care, environmental cleanliness and safety.
- Initiates work orders, contacting Facilities Management as appropriate or requested.
- Informs nursing staff of patient, family or physician needs/requests.

Qualifications:
Surgical Tech Diploma, Surgical Tech Certificate or Current LVN (w/ OB exp.) - required
Current BLS required
NRP card required - within 90 days
Knowledge of Medical Terminology
General clerical and computer knowledge
Bilingual (English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese) preferred
