Primary Purpose of the Position:
The Historic Interpreter I at Bentonville Battlefield is the primary visitor services point of contact for visitors. This includes greeting people, monitoring the phones, providing orientation, and giving guided tours.

Key Responsibilities:
  • The Interpreter I serves as the site education coordinator. In this capacity the Interpreter creates innovative programing for students to experience both on-site and at school.
  • The Interpreter I serves as the volunteer coordinator. The position is responsible for recruiting, training, scheduling, and supervising site volunteers.
  • Conducting outreach to our support group, schools, civic organizations, military groups, and peer entities is an important part of this position. This may include off-site programming during nights/weekends.
  • Guided tours of the Harper House and “ranger talks” are conducted daily by the Interpreter I. This position will also be asked to learn and give multi-hour battlefield tours for military and motor coach tours.
  • The work schedule is Tuesday-Saturday, 9am-5pm, with some evening work required during special events.
  • The position is responsible for answering site inquiries via phone, email, and mail – to include scheduling and booking groups and site rentals. A willingness to make phone calls as needed is important.

Site Information:
The March 1865, Battle of Bentonville was the largest and bloodiest battle ever fought in North Carolina. With nearly 2,300 acres preserved, Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site is the largest historic site in North Carolina. The site's mission is to interpret the Battle of Bentonville, life in North Carolina during the Civil War, and to preserve the battlefield's historical resources.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

To receive credit for your work history and credentials, you must provide the information on the application form. In order to qualify for this position, you must meet ALL the following KSA's listed below:
  • Must have a valid NC Driver's License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
  • Must have the ability to spend extended periods outside during times of hot, cold, and inclement weather, while possibly being exposed to insects and other environmental factors.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating in written and/or oral form.
  • The ability to work with and supervise temporary employees and volunteers.
  • The ability to produce text for reports and exhibits using first person historical research is required. A writing sample showing the applicant’s ability to produce text from first person research may be requested during the interview process.
  • Demonstrated experience with any of the following: cash management, basic accounting, purchasing skills, or cash register sales.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of U.S. History, specifically the Civil War era.
  • Must have the ability to lift up to 40 lbs., at times unassisted.
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft applications and some form of graphic design software.

Management preferences:
1. Two years’ experience working or volunteering in a historic site or museum setting.
2. Experience giving guided tours.
3. Experience working with non-profits.
4. Experience conducting first person historical research on the Civil War era.
5. Living history experience or a demonstrated ability to work with living historians and volunteers.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience in giving museum tours; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
