RESIDENCY/TRANSITION TO PRACTICE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    What is the application process?
New graduate registered nurses, or registered nurses without acute care hospital experience, may apply to our Residency/Transition to Practice RN candidate bank. Please make sure you complete all required assessments (questionnaires) for the position and add your resume. If you had previously applied for other positions through UWHires, be sure to update your online resume so that it is current. Our application system does not allow you to partially complete an assessment and go back later to finalize it. Reference information requested in an assessment may be provided later if necessary.

Part of the application process for Residency/Transition to Practice positions includes completing up to four assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process. Each assessment will appear on your screen for you to complete as soon as you select "Apply to this Job" on this job announcement. You have the option to begin the assessment or postpone it BUT once you begin the assessment, it must be completed at that time. If you postpone the assessment, it will appear on your "My Jobs" page to take when you are ready. Please note that your application will not be reviewed, and you will not be considered for positions until all assessments are complete.

    What areas hire residency RNs?
Acute Care Residency opportunities typically include complex med-surg, cardiology, PCU, transplant, rehab and oncology areas. Residency opportunities periodically are available in Critical Care, Perinatal, and Perioperative Nursing, and you must apply separately to those specific job postings when they are open.

When should I apply, and can I apply before I receive my Registered Nurse License?
Please apply during your final quarter/semester of your nursing program or later. You may apply before you are licensed, but you must hold an Active Washington State Registered Nurse License or an Active Temporary Practice Permit prior to starting employment.

What should be included on my resume?
Your resume should include your entire education and work history, and provide information about your clinical experiences (clinical areas of focus, facilities where completed, types of units/departments, dates and number of clinical hours, as well as your senior practicum/capstone experience) and graduation date (month and year). Do not feel restricted to one page, as our applicant tracking system does not have page parameters.

Do I need to include other work experience, even if it was not in a health care position?
Please include all work experience on your resume.

Can I submit a cover letter separately to you?
Cover letters are not needed as a part of the application process.

Can I submit letters of reference and clinical evaluations to you?
Please keep your letters of reference and clinical evaluations until you have the opportunity to come in for an interview.

How many residency positions are available?
The number of residency/transition to practice positions varies throughout the year, depending on vacancies in the units, mix of current staff, and applications from experienced nurses.

If selected, when does the residency start?
We hire into residencies throughout the year, with orientation dates offered approximately twice a month. Some residencies, such as Critical Care and Perioperative, have specific start dates.

How can I track the status of my application?
If your application is not selected, you will receive electronic notification and your online application status is updated. Otherwise your application is active and under consideration until the candidate bank closes.

How long until I hear from someone?
Your application is reviewed by the recruiters and remains active in the candidate bank. If there is an opportunity for you to interview, we will contact you.

How long does my application stay active?
Your application stays active as long as the candidate bank is open. We typically open a new residency RN/transition to practice candidate bank every 4-6 months.

Does my application automatically roll over to the new candidate bank, or do I need to apply again?
Your application does not roll over to the new candidate bank. You will need to re-apply. This provides an opportunity for you to update your resume and assessments.

If I apply to the UWMC Montlake candidate bank, does that mean that I am being considered for jobs at UWMC Northwest, Harborview Medical Center, Valley Medical Center, and UW Neighborhood clinics as well?
While these hospitals and clinics are all under the UW Medicine umbrella, each has its own hiring process for residency programs.

What does the Transition to Practice program at UWMC Montlake include?
  • A unit-based clinical orientation with experienced RN preceptors, using the Tiered Skills Acquisition Model.
  • SKills day class, monthly seminars focused on quality and safety and specialty classes based on clinical area
  • A mentor to continue your development through your first year at UWMC

The UWMC Montlake Transition to Practice Program supports you to:
  • Safely provide care for patients in the nursing specialty you have selected.
  • Prioritize patient care based on acuity or urgency of patient need.
