MOS Code: 3F211 (Airforce), 861A (Navy), 68S (Army), HS (Coast Guard)
Education and Experience: A Bachelor's degree or higher in Health Education, Community Health Education, Public Health Education, School Health Education, Behavioral Sciences or a related field and a minimum of two (2) years experience providing health education in a public health, clinic and/or school setting or direct contact experience with the public, patient or provider in a communicable disease control, epidemiology or preventive health program.
Licenses and Certificates : Texas Class "C" Driver's License or equivalent from another state.
General Purpose
Under general supervision, develop, deliver and administer public health presentations, counseling, or outreach activities to individuals or groups in various settings or clinics on a variety of prevention programs to promote a healthy lifestyle.
Typical Duties
Research, plan, develop and conduct public health presentations. Involves: Prepare and present presentations on various public health topics to include, but not limited to, hygiene, nutrition, tobacco prevention, sexual health, child injury prevention, HIV/AIDS, obesity prevention, and infectious/communicable conditions, such as influenza. Create, use and/or modify educational materials for ethnically and racially diverse audiences. Organize and prepare materials on specific subjects of public health interest and utilize various resources such as audio-visuals, handouts, visual aides, etc.
Conduct individual and group counseling sessions to specialized or high risk populations. Involves: Conduct client risk assessments, counseling, testing and referral services using individual-level and/or group-level counseling protocols and tools designed to help clients reduce risk of HIV, STDs, tobacco-related illness, child injury, obesity and other consequences of risky or unhealthy behaviors. May administer HIV tests using venipuncture or finger sticks. Provides referral for treatment, education, social services and other interventions as required by the program. Provide confidential follow up by telephone or field visit as required by the program.
Conduct outreach to designated target populations to deliver prevention messages. Involves: Attend health fairs and other events targeting the general population or specific high risk groups. Prepare and handout literature, brochures, prevention materials and information related to a specific health topic. Promote community events, outreach activities, and campaigns. Market health education and Department of Health programs to increase utilization of services.
Perform related, professional duties contributing to program goals. Involves: Collect, input, format and report information for various programs. Administer internal and external data collection instruments to include telephone interviews, printed surveys, electronic surveys and related evaluation tools. Submit monthly reports and required data and participate in meetings and conference calls. Attend required training set forth by the program in order to meet required program goal and deliverables. Work with community organizations, agencies and advocacy groups to accomplish program goals and serve on Ad Hoc committees. Provide designated support for special projects, audits or activities overseen by other staff or supervisor. Maintain records, filing systems and compile and organize information.
