About Beeflow


Beeflow is a biotech startup company that leverages scientific knowledge and technology to improve the impact of ecosystem services in agriculture. Beeflow creates and manages pollination programs for farmers with the goal of consistently increasing crop yields. The company combines scientific knowledge of crop pollination, bee biology & behavior and chemical ecology with proprietary technologies including molecules that help train bees to pollinate specific crops and a plant-based bee diet that enhances bees’ immune system. This novel approach to pollination management allows growers to produce more with less.


Based in California and with operations across the US West Coast, Mexico, Peru and Argentina, Beeflow closed an $8.3M Series A in May 2021 with Ospraie Ag Sciences, Future Ventures, Vectr Ventures, Jeff Wilke (former CEO of Worldwide Consumer at Amazon), SOSV and others. Beeflow’s team of experts includes biologists, ecologists, entomologists, agronomists, and entrepreneurs.

About This Role


We are looking for an experienced Head of Operations to oversee, direct, and organize the work of the global Operations teams to deliver high quality and value-added Pollination services to farming companies growing berries, almonds, avocados, among others.


The Head of Operations role is a key member of the senior management team, reporting to the CEO. You will be part of the Executive Team, but we expect you to have a very “boots in the ground” approach as we are still a young company and the Executive Team gets involved to develop solutions


This position is based in the Los Angeles area, CA and will require +40% international travel to attend role responsibilities.


Role and responsibilities
  • Planning & Logistics: responsible for planning all our Operations and managing all inputs and logistics aspects of the business. Ensure all needed supplies to execute Beeflow Pollination Programs are delivered on time internally (Field and Bee Operations teams) and externally (growers and Beeflow’s Pollinator Network members).
  • Act as a hiring manager for the department, understanding the business needs and goals for a new hire and planning accordingly.
  • Field Operations: responsible for delivering Beeflow’s Pollination Programs. Manage a team that performs pollination monitoring/data collection at a crop and beehive level. Customer service, day to day interaction with growers, bring the voice of the customer to Beeflow and create the best customer experience with Sales & Field Development.
  • Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
  • Oversee, direct, and organize the work of global Operations teams (in Peru, Mexico and the US):
  • Bee Operations: responsible for supplying the healthiest and highest quality bees to our customers. Develop and manage Beeflow’s Pollinator Network (third-party bee providers who Partner with Beeflow). Search and onboard bee suppliers, as well as ensure bees are fed with Beeflow’s technologies.
  • Lead development of company Operational budget as well as execution of S&OP meetings.
  • Lead the development of repeatable, sustainable structure and Operations processes that allow the company to continue to grow and fulfill goals.
  • Establish and monitor team performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, conduct bi-annual performance evaluations, and administer salary adjustments.
  • Mentor and develop team members using a supportive and collaborative approach: assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, and monitor and evaluate results.
  • Design and manage reporting tools to enhance visibility into the Operational performance of the business; evaluate operational KPIs and provide meaningful analysis to company leadership.
  • Develop and oversee Operations SLAs with all other company departments. Set weekly, and monthly targets, and drive execution in line with those KPIs.


Requirements


  • The readiness to travel +40% (∼20 weeks/year) internationally to attend role responsibilities.
  • Well-organized self-directed and entrepreneurial, you recognize the value of working as a team.
  • Proven strong leadership skills (+5 years experience leading teams).
  • Fluency in English and Spanish.
  • MBA or MD/PhD in Agronomy, Plant Sciences, Entomology, or related fields with proven experience managing Operations and Logistics.
  • Proven farm management experience. Crop knowledge in berries, almonds, avocados is desired.
  • Knowledge about bee biology and crop pollination is highly desired.
  • A hands-on leader with growth mindset and self-awareness and with demonstrable willingness to become a better professional and develop their team.
  • Attention to detail with good business judgment and focused on driving business results.
  • Good judgment and strong customer focus with deep ag industry expertise.
