Under the direction and guidance of the Manager of Software Development, the Graphic/Web Designer is a highly collaborative but also self-driven role that requires plenty of creative thinking and problem solving. This role will initially focus on brainstorming and execution of design for our award-winning learning management system as well as any related tools.

The Graphic/Web Designer is well-versed in adaptive, responsive, and just as importantly, accessible design, especially for single page web applications. They should be able to work comfortably along the entire length of the design pipeline – from brainstorming to mockups to wireframes to prototypes – in order to rapidly produce and demonstrate design ideas, and push them through to the final product. The Graphic/Web Designer is sufficiently familiar with CSS/HTML/JS to partner with Developers in the prototyping/development process.

While not a trained developer, the Graphic/Web Designer is comfortable learning and developing their coding understanding , as they collaborate with the other developers on their team and their knowledge of software development grows.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Works closely with their team under the direction of the Manager of Software Development to design and prototype new features for the Berklee Online Learning Management System and associated tools. Creates mockups, wireframes and prototypes of the designs. Presents mockups to the team and to stakeholders. Gets feedback on designs and iterates on said feedback. Works with our software development team to turn those designs into prototypes and then the final product. Creates custom design elements – icons, banners, etc. – in Photoshop or similar software. Looks to grow their coding chops by slowly taking on more and more code-related responsibilities and working with/shadowing other developers. We expect you to grow from mostly-designer, with some web coding chops to a coder/designer superhero! Communicates clearly and effectively with their team and management to ensure that realistic goals are set and accomplished within their respective deadlines. Clearly documents their work using project-tracking software, in order to ensure transparency and cohesion.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

A Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience in web design, graphic design, software design or similar (please provide a link to your portfolio). The ability to create clear, concise mockups and wireframes using Photoshop, Figma, Adobe XD and/or similar software. Knowledge of design software such as Photoshop or Illustrator for the creation of custom design elements (icons, banners, buttons, etc.) to be used in the Berklee Online Learning Management System and other Berklee Environments Some HTML/CSS/JS knowledge – enough to wire up buttons, forms, other small interactive elements, in order to present a more complete picture of the intended design to the stakeholders. Ember JS, Angular or React experience (especially with creating templates) a plus! Willingness to learn new aspects of the software development pipeline on the job. Very pleasant personality, friendly, and supportive nature. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines, prioritize, and work on multiple projects simultaneously with great efficiency and attention to detail. Ability to communicate effectively across Berklee Online departments and other Berklee divisions, including course development, technology, marketing, and management. Experience working at a higher education institution or within online education is a plus. Some musical knowledge is also a plus! We are a music school, and a lot of your work will center around musical education. This is by no means a requirement, but if you have some music theory knowledge or you play an instrument, please be sure to mention it!
