Job Description

Position Description

  • Expands the reach of HKS teaching and learning through excellence in visual storytelling
  • Elevates HKS research through communications and visual strategies
  • Supports fundraising and recruitment initiatives through various channels
  • Manages time effectively and set stakeholder expectation while working on multiple projects
  • Builds audience engagement through testing and analytics review
  • Applies understanding of key audiences to translate research, editorial, and data into layouts, prototypes, and graphics for rich digital and print engagement
  • Establishes and evolves visual style guides by synthesizing visual strategies, design systems, and brand elements
  • Conceptualizes and delivers modern visual strategy solutions across print and digital products
  • Leads design projects and initiatives in a multi-disciplinary environment of print, web, digital, and environmental design driven by curiosity and openness • Contributes to content creation in collaboration with writers, producers, and engagement in HKS community
  • Builds on established brand strategy
  • Creates and produces digital and print design projects in collaboration with other design team members, digital, multimedia, and editorial partners
  • Supports accomplishing OCPA goals as defined by HKS priorities
  • Ensures and provides HKS brand stewardship, guidelines, and management
  • Multi-disciplinary designer develops and implements compelling visual design solutions
  • Develops, presents, and socializes innovative design solutions, supported by design rationale, brand and industry standards, and emerging design trends
  • Demonstrates a deep understanding and interest in visual storytelling through the use of graphic design, art direction, photography, illustration, data visualization, and motion graphics
  • Designs a range of multi-platform communications products for internal and external audiences

Basic Qualifications

  • A minimum of 8 years of professional design experience in integrated, cross-channel marketing communications.
  • Bachelor's degree or certificate in graphic design

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Ability to facilitate project brainstorming, develop creative briefs, and lead project team to meet established goals.
  • Support HKS digital asset management system.
  • Highly motivated and thrives in a multi-channel environment managing multi-project workplan.
  • Experience in higher education or public policy a plus.
  • Understanding of user experience, web and accessibility standards, and social media platforms
  • Knowledge of HTML and CSS. Prototyping and Drupal experience an asset.
  • Solid mastery of Adobe CC products (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, XD, After Effects), and experience with Microsoft suite.
  • Demonstrated understanding of design principles that connect ideas, create concepts, and deliver effective communications.
  • Strong multi-disciplinary portfolio with excellence in design, branding systems, typography, art direction, digital (UX/UI, motion graphics), and identity.
  • Photography and/or illustration skills.
  • Integrated design approach in digital experience, data visualization, email marketing, and social media platforms.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to build relationships across the organization.
  • Ability to accept feedback and work in a professional manner.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excitement and confidence to advocate effectively for brand standards and design principles throughout the organization.

This is a hybrid position based on our campus in Cambridge, MA. As a campus-based institution, we place a high value on the in-person experience, cross-team collaboration, and strong community building in order to create a vibrant campus for our students, faculty, staff, and research fellows. The position is required to work in-person on campus a minimum of three days per week during the academic year. Specific days and schedule will be determined between you and your manager.

Salary Range: $74,200 - $126,200
Note: Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range; however, they are ultimately determined by the scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity.

  • Retirement: University-funded retirement plan with contributions from 5% to 15% of eligible compensation, based on age and earnings with full vesting after 3 years of service.
  • Tuition Assistance Program: Competitive program including $40 per class at the Harvard Extension School and reduced tuition through other participating Harvard graduate schools.
