Position: Formulation Chemist I
SULA LABS is a skincare R&D lab that develops and consults for custom technologies & formulas geared towards dark skin tones and Black-owned brands. The current client portfolio spans from independent beauty companies to those affiliated with Target, Sephora, and Ulta Beauty.
Description: We are looking for a part-time R&D chemist to support the R&D team, which is responsible for most of SULA LABS’ operations. The ideal candidate has at least 1-2 years of cosmetic formulation experience, and will be responsible for supporting formula development, raw material sourcing, testing, and technology transfers to manufacturing partners. Additionally, the ideal candidate will be able to perform varied multi-task formulation, testing and development of products for various clients. This role will be hybrid - both onsite and remote.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Create and execute benchtop formulation batches for personal care products in SULA LABS’ portfolio.
- Create and execute SPF batches, alongside using spectrophotometric methods to evaluate in-vitro SPF value.
- Troubleshooting formulation work and out-of-specification batches for adjustment and final validation.
- Perform and monitor stability testing on R&D batches.
- Internal support with ensuring the assembly and readiness of technical transfer documents between clients and their corresponding contract manufacturers.
- Upkeep log of raw materials and their respective documentation in the central management system.
- Engage in monthly meetings with Clinical Research Organizations (CROs) and ingredient suppliers for the substantiation of marketing claims.
- Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) standards.
Requirements for Qualification:
- Data entry (Microsoft Excel), and using a variety of spreadsheets, word processing, formulation databases, and presentation software.
- Must be a chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or biology graduate with 3 years of work experience in the cosmetic R&D industry.
- Must have experience with sunscreen formulation.
- Must have knowledge of rules and regulation (FDA, CTFA, PCPC) for global formulation.
- Must have knowledge of ingredient deck listing.
- Must be flexible and willing to perform other duties as needed (fill lab batches into components, prepare evaluation sheets and labels)
- Must be able to calibrate R&D lab equipment such as spectrophotometers, homogenizers, hot plates, and pipettes.

Comepensation:
