Ideal Candidate


Under direction, plans, coordinates, and supervises the lead equipment mechanic and their crew(s) in the Fleet Division in the maintenance and repair of City fleet, and mechanical equipment; implements maintenance policies and procedures; outlines, assigns, and determines work projects; performs a variety of technical tasks; ensures safe work practices; acts as the Facilites and Fleet Manager in their absence; performs other related duties as required.


DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS


The Fleet Supervisor is the full supervisory classification assigned to direct the daily operations of the Fleet Division. Positions within this class serve as supervisors for all fleet and mechanical equipment maintenance projects, inspecting, evaluating, and approving the completion of assignments by assigned fleet maintenance work crews. Performance of the work requires the use of considerable independence, initiative, and discretion within established guidelines. This classification is distinguished from the next higher classification of Facilities and Fleet Manager in that the latter has overall responsibility for the administration and management of all the Facilities and Fleet Division operations.


SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED


Receives direction from the Facilities and Fleet Manager. Exercises supervision over assigned staff.


Qualifications


Education & Experience


Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for Fleet Supervisor. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess the equivalent of two years of increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment in a lead or supervisory capacity, and a high school diploma or equivalent.


License


Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Class B California driver’s license with tank and airbrake endorsement and Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master technician certification is required within 1 year of appointment.

SELECTION PROCESS


All applications will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training and other job related qualifications. Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee that a candidate will be invited to participate in the selection process. Based upon a review of employment applications and supplemental questionnaires received, a limited number of the qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process.


The process will consist of an Oral Panel Interview. An eligibility list will be established from those who pass the examination process with a score of 70% or higher. Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The list will remain in effect for at least one year unless abolished sooner.


The department will invite the most qualified candidates from the eligibility list to a final department interview. The Public Works Director will make the final appointment. All new hires are required to successfully pass a one year probationary period.


Note: The City of Burlingame reserves the right, at its discretion, to limit the number of qualified candidates invited to the selection process.


PRIOR TO APPOINTMENT


In The Last FIVE Years


Prior to appointment, candidates will be required to provide a ten year DMV printout (H6) no more than three months old. Candidates who do not provide a ten year DMV printout (H6) no more than three months old, will be disqualified from the recruitment process. Candidates must have an acceptable driving record defined as follows:


  • No accidents where applicant was at fault
  • No more than 3 moving violations
  • No outstanding warrants for failure to appear


In The Last SEVEN Years


  • No convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • No convictions for reckless driving


Applicants with six or more points over the previous three years on his/her driving record will be considered to have an unacceptable driving record and will be disqualified from this recruitment process.


Prior To Appointment, Candidates Will Be Required To


  • Pass a fingerprint check submitted to the Department of Justice
  • Pass a background investigation, drug screen and physical examination
  • Comply with The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 and provide proof of identity and authorization to work in the United States at date of hire


This position has a 12 month probationary period from the date of hire. Whereby, the selected candidate must receive a rating of no less than 'satisfactory' at the end of the probationary period to continue forward with employment. During the 12 month probationary period, the selected candidate can be terminated with, or without cause.
