Children and Screens’ Policy Internship track offers current graduate and advanced undergraduate students in the fields of policy, public health, political science, or law an opportunity to enhance their academic training and research skills by analyzing and translating policy-related information in the field of digital media’s impact on child and adolescent development. The intern will participate in efforts to write about, report on, and inform the public of the latest legislative updates in this field.
The program offers a unique chance for students interested in academic course credit, with a strong focus on direct support from our dedicated staff members. In addition to earning course credit, interns will receive individualized mentoring ensuring intern’s progress and fulfillment of their personal educational goals.
Interns will work remotely for a minimum of 12 hours per week with flexibility around prior commitments. The internship lasts for 15 weeks, from Tuesday, September 5th to Friday, December 15th, 2023.
Successful applicants will be current graduate or advanced undergraduate students who reside in the U.S., are majoring in a related field from an accredited university, demonstrate the ability to complete assigned projects, and contribute to the team in a virtual environment.
The Institute aims for this internship program to be as mutually fulfilling as possible; we will assess each candidate’s capabilities, interests, and goals and tailor the role accordingly. While all interns will contribute to ongoing projects and event planning, individualized projects can be taken on if approved and suited to the Institute’s overall mission.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Tracking, analyzing, and keeping abreast of new legislation in areas of interest
- Identify and discuss news and scholarly articles that may impact the Institute’s policy goals
- Assisting with the development of a policy resource section of our Children and Screens website
- Identify legislators who may be receptive to the Institute’s research and mission
- Monitor judicial proceedings involving big tech
- Assisting the Institute in its regular programming, including an International Congress, interdisciplinary retreats, and in-house meetings
- Drafting policy briefs, newsletters, and reports regarding the impact of policy on the intersection of children and technology
- Other duties as assigned
ELIGIBILITY
Minimum qualifications are as follows:
- Current graduate or advanced undergraduate student working towards a degree in policy, political science, public health, law, psychology, child development, or media studies
- A desire to learn about and be involved in the cycle of research impacting policy, and policy that impacts research
- An understanding of the policymaking process, with a desire to learn more
- Proficient in all Google applications, especially Drive, Sheets, Docs, and Gmail
- Interest in exploring a career in policy, public health, or law
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to attend regular weekly meetings between staff and interns
- Excellent work-ethic
- Capable of responding to general guidance and working independently in a remote setting
