Job Description
Job Summary

Under immediate supervision, is responsible for performing skilled work operating light to heavy equipment used to maintain vegetation within city channels, rights-of-way, and medians. Additional responsibilities may include operation equipment used to excavate, load, transfer, or move dirt, gravel, or other material in the maintenance or construction of streets, and other public properties. May exercise functional supervision over assigned staff.

Work Hours
6:00 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. (Summer) and 6:30 a.m. - 5:15 p.m. (Winter) Monday - Thursday or Tuesday - Friday

Essential Job Functions

  • Performs minor maintenance and service checks on equipment.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.
  • Removes brush and trash from drainage inlets.
  • May assist in the placement of barricades, signs, flashers, and safety cones.
  • Cleans and removes debris from streets, parks, drainage, ditches, City parks, and other areas, frequently lifting materials weighting up to 50 pounds.
  • Performs unskilled and semi-skilled labor work related to various maintenance and construction activities.
  • Operates a 10 cy or less dump trucks to and from work locations, construction sites, etc.
  • May prepare a daily log of activities.
  • Transports tools and equipment to and from work sites.
  • Operates large tractors, zero turn mowers, and various hand tools used to maintain vegetation within city channels, rights-of-way and medians.

Job Requirements

  • One (1) year of experience operating light, medium, or heavy equipment.
  • Must obtain a Valid Texas Commercial Class "B" Driver's License plus all required endorsements within six (6) months of employment.
  • Ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience operating tractor mowers and/or street sweepers.
  • CDL "B" CDL Driver's License.
  • Current DOT Medical Certification.
Applicant Information
  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Working conditions are primarily outside in a construction site environment with frequent exposure to temperature extremes, traffic construction dust, damp/wet surfaces, overhead power lines, high noise, oily surfaces, liquid asphalt, and lime.
  • Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position, with or without accommodations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures related to the equipment being operated.
  • Knowledge of operating characteristics and limitations of the equipment being operated.

  • Knowledge of basic construction methods and practices.
  • Ability to learn proper equipment operating procedures, methods, and practices.
