Description


Assists the professional staff with the delivery of services to patients in a variety of settings.

Provides direct patient care, and/or one to one observation to selected patients under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse. Assists, escorts and transports patients.


Responsibilities


A. Clinical/Technical/Service

  • Performs eye irrigations
  • Assists the professional staff with the delivery of services to patients in the ED setting
  • Assists patients to get needed services by communicating those needs to the nurse
  • Prepares, adjusts, and teaches the use of crutches and canes as outlined by the RN/PT.
  • Collects specimens, performs venipuncture and fingersticks for blood glucose
  • Assists the healthcare team during medical, trauma, sepsis, and stroke codes
  • Communicates information to patients, families, and visitors
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area
  • Maintains BCLS certification as required by EMS standards
  • Assists with patient's examinations, and performs vital signs as ordered.
  • Obtains and provides nourishment for patients
  • Is cognizant of the need for safety devices; applies or assists with the application
  • Provides minor treatments as directed - dressings, application of ace bandages, applications of slings and ice, pediculosis
  • Provides direct patient care, and/or one-to-one constant or safety observation to selected patients under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse
  • Obtains EKGs as ordered
  • Performs and assists with designated procedures, using an aseptic technique as indicated
  • Assists, escorts, and transports patients as needed
  • Sets up, stocks, and maintains examining rooms
  • Provides post-mortem care
  • Assists with the application of casts and splints

Age Specific Competencies(Neonate/Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric)

a.Identifies physical, behavioral, and emotional characteristics typical for the age group

b.Modifies approaches based on patient age-specific needs and responses to treatment

c.Provides care for patients based on age-specific needs

d.Uses communication techniques that are age appropriate

B. Organizational/Managerial

  • Participates in the Departments of Nursing and Emergency Services Quality Improvement Program/activities
  • Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information

C. Educational/Professional Development

  • Meets all regulatory and annual health assessment requirements
  • Participates in the development of other staff members

D. Communication/Relationships

  • Adheres to Mount Sinai Health Systems legal and ethical standards
  • Displays courtesy, tact and patience during interactions with all members of the hospital staff and extended community
  • May be required to perform other duties as assigned
  • Demonstrates a professional, courteous, and respectful attitude in dealing with patients, families and significant others

Qualifications

  • Heartsaver Certification required from American Heart Association
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant Certificate program from an approved school or 2 years of prior experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate degree desirable.

Compensation

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $24.43 - $26.84 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
