Job Description
Under direct supervision, assist physicians & nurses w/ examination, treatment & special procedures. Apply splints to patients as authorized by Chief of Orthopedic Department, performs related patient care duties in clinic, holding ward of Emergency Room following established policies, routines, practices & procedures.

Essential Functions:
  • Provides assistance in emergency room w/ various diagnostic examinations by positioning & draping the patient, assists during minor surgical procedures
  • Issues & adjusts crutches & canes as required, instructs patients in proper techniques of walking as authorized by Chief of Orthopedic Department
  • Performs closed heart massage (CPR)
  • Pick up & deliver items such as forms, mail, specimens, etc, between Clinic & various departments
  • Cleans previously used instruments, placing items on tray or wrapping as necessary for pick-up or delivery to central supply
  • Assists w/ special procedures such as peritoneal lavage, lumbar punctures, thoracotomy, thoracentesis, etc
  • Upholds KP's Policies & Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities & applicable state, federal & local laws
  • Performs a variety of routine lab tests using tablets, or dipsticks to determine presence of blood, pH, protein, sugar, acetone in urine, performs pulmonary function studies using Wright Peak Flow Meter, uses ER centrifuge to determine patient's Hct, run 12-lead EKG on patients as directed
  • Apply basic splints for fractures under physician's instructions using wooden, metal, plastic, or plaster material as authorized by Chief of Orthopedic Department
  • Administers maximist & IPPPB treatments to patients as ordered by physician
  • Assists w/ therapeutic & diagnostic patient care functions which require sterile technique, such as bladder catheterizations & irrigations, enemas, removal and/or application of the dressings & splints, cleansing and/or irrigating wounds & prepping
  • Compares complete vital signs & clothing list on patients & facilitates or completes collateral paperwork such as lab slips & patient consent forms
  • Performs Trained Clinic Assistant duties as may be required
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Prepares male patients for surgery or performs routine care such as shaving & prepping or catheterization
  • Promotes, ensures, & improves customer service to internal/external customers by demonstrating skills which are consistent w/ the organization's philosophy of providing extraordinary customer relations & quality service
  • Direct & transport patients to appropriate rooms or areas
  • Explains standard self-care procedures as directed, & orients patients to medical center policies & practices
  • Carries out physician orders as directed by initiating and/or completing diagnostic test forms, screens incoming phone calls & takes appropriate action, chart inpatient & outpatient medical records as directed
  • Maintains adequate stock of supplies & reports needs to supervisor
  • Completes necessary arrangements or organizes treatment areas prior to surgical and/or examination procedures as required for particular procedures

Basic Qualifications:

  • Employee will have a maximum of three opportunities to demonstrate/validate the ability to apply all types of splints and other orthopedic devices
  • Proof of successful completion of an anatomy course (from an accredited college, vocational, adult education) within the last (3) years OR six (6) months (1,000 hours) of recent (within two (2) years) Emergency Room Technician/EMT experience required
  • Current BCLS required
  • Successful completion of Kaiser Permanente Orthopedics demonstration/ validation of ability to apply all types of splints within the probationary period
  • Six (6) months (1,000 hours) of recent experience (within two (2) years) in a health care/patient contact setting required
