Job Description
Overview
The Journals Editorial Intern position provides administrative, analytical, and publishing support to editorial staff in the U.S. Science, Technology, & Medicine (STM) team. We are looking for a candidate who is eager to learn about and grow within the academic publishing industry, and is able to quickly pick up new information, think critically and creatively, and engage meaningfully with the daily work. Training will be provided for all the processes listed and there is no prior publishing experience required.
This is a paid, part time internship (15-25 hours per week during normal office hours). This position is for the 2023 summer season with the potential to continue into the 2023 fall semester. It is a remote position that will require you to have an internet connection. Must be an active graduate or undergraduate student, currently enrolled in a college or university.
  • Please note that this position does not focus on writing or editing of our content, as it primarily supports the business, technical, and administrative aspects of journal publishing.
Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities
A sample work week may look something like:
  • 1-2 hours of Lean behavior and process support and/or other special projects
  • 1-2 hours supporting journal performance and marketing
  • 2-3 hours a week working on pilot projects and support of our How to Get Published webinars and initiatives
  • 2-3 hours a week of instructional learning (i.e., training, learning & development classes, or individual mentor coaching) and staff shadowing
  • 2-3 hours of relationship management including correspondence, data entry or general administration
  • 2-3 hours a week conducting market research and analysis (e.g., Dimensions)
Qualifications & Education
  • Outstanding organizational, problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated ability to follow directions, learn, and understand departmental procedures
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to complete and follow through on priorities
  • Demonstrated excellent English verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to be a self-starter and work in a remote environment
  • A dedication to amplifying diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Ability to learn new software
  • Must be active graduate or undergraduate student, currently enrolled in a college or university
  • Ability to effectively manage time to meet deadlines and work professionally under pressure
  • Ability to effectively multi-task
Preferred
  • A basic understanding of how social science research is conducted
  • Some publishing or general office experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, OneNote, Teams, and PowerPoint

We anticipate the minimum full-time hourly pay rate for this role is $16.00.
