The Parks Department is seeking well-qualified candidates for the position of Dock Worker.
The Dock Worker will perform a variety of manual tasks such as: dock maintenance, grounds maintenance; minor equipment repair; building maintenance, transportation of materials and supplies and custodial tasks.
The ideal candidate will be:
- Well organized and able to multi-task and
- Experienced with tools and construction methods;
- Passionate about boating;
- Able to work independently;
- Outgoing and comfortable interacting with park visitors and Marina tenants.
NOTE: This is a limited-term, at-will assignment. Limited- term employees are assigned to assignments not to exceed three years. They receive medical and dental benefits, similar to regular employees, and a defined contribution retirement plan.
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Maintain logs, coordinate work requests, and perform related office support tasks.
- Order and receive supplies, tools, and equipment; review invoices against supplies received; and deliver supplies to appropriate area.
- Assemble, maintain, and repair equipment
- Utilize the assistance of and instruct volunteers or other staff to perform work.
- Assist boaters and park visitors, and back up office staff with customer service as necessary.
- With proper training and supervision, assist with water rescue aboard Patrol Boat.
- Operate and maintain power tools, hand tools, and specialized equipment.
- Operate a car, van, pickup or light delivery vehicle to transport materials or tools.
- Water, trim, and remove trees, plants, and weeds.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Operate and maintain equipment or hand tools used in the maintenance of docks, buildings, grounds, and facilities.
- Provide complete custodial services to public restrooms.
- Fuel vehicles as required and report the need for service repair.
- Conduct daily dock repairs, including replacing cleats, gusset, fascia and whaler boards, cleaning docks and dock boxes, and light plumbing and carpentry. Lift, move, load, arrange, and transport materials or supplies and or waste materials.
Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is one year of experience providing building and facility maintenance and minor equipment repair.
Knowledge of:
- Fixtures, building hardware, and equipment
- Principles and techniques used in basic custodial services, building maintenance, and minor equipment repair
- Basic arithmetic
- Methods, practices, and equipment used in the receipt, storage, handling, and ordering of materials and equipment
- Methods, materials, operations, tools, and practices used in moving, loading, arranging, and transporting materials, records, and supplies
- Safety regulations, precautions, and practices
Skill/Ability to:
- Make accurate estimates of time and materials required to perform the job
- Climb ladders
- Follow safety practices
- Walk or stand for long periods of time
- Follow oral and written instructions
- Communicate effectively and tactfully with customers and others
- Lift, carry, push, or move materials, supplies, or equipment up to 50 pounds
- Properly use and care for vehicles, tools, and equipment used in the job
Licensure/Certification: Some positions may require either a class B or class C driver license or the equivalent.
