Job Description
CAIR San Francisco Bay Area is hiring a full-time, temporary Immigrants' Rights Case Worker. This position aims to provide immigration legal services to members of the Bay Area Muslim community and increase our capacity to provide pro bono/low bono immigration legal services to Afghan new arrivals. This position has the potential to turn into a full time permanent role.


Title: Immigrants' Rights Case Worker


Reporting Relationships: Reports to the Managing Attorney


Schedule Type: Temporary, one-year term, October 1, 2023 - September 30, 2024. Occasional evenings and weekends required.


Location: Based in CAIR's Santa Clara office. CAIR staff are currently working a hybrid schedule, with three days in-person and two days remote. Requires some travel throughout the Bay Area (vehicle and driver's license required).


Key Responsibilities


  • Assist legal staff in the preparation of family and humanitarian-based immigration applications including Asylum, Adjustment of Status, Special Immigrant Visas, and Temporary Protected Status
  • Assist with establishing and maintaining a referral database of various services for the Afghan community
  • Conducting legal intakes, interviews, follow-ups, and responses; summarizing intake substance, and presenting recommendations for future action or referral
  • Provide administrative support to attorneys
  • Participate in community outreach including Know Your Rights and immigration presentations and legal clinics
  • Provide translation and interpretation in Dari and Pashto both orally and in writing to assist the legal team with Afghan immigration cases


All CAIR staff are required to assist in general duties such as answering phones, weekly outreach, fundraising, and other office tasks.


Required Qualifications


  • High degree of self-motivation and creativity.
  • Commitment to social justice and CAIR's mission and values
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfort working productively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Basic computer proficiency including knowledge of MS Office, MS Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat
  • Excellent interpersonal skills both in person and by phone, with high degree of professionalism
  • Experience working with people from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Access to a working vehicle and the ability to drive throughout the greater Bay Area


Preferred Qualifications


  • Work experience with a non-profit organization or in a related field
  • Associates degree or higher
  • Familiarity, knowledge, and experience working with the American Muslim community
  • Verbal or written fluency in Dari, Farsi, and/or Pashto
  • Experience conducting outreach and working with volunteers


Compensation


  • 10 paid holidays, 10 sick days, and 12 vacation days

  • Compensation in the range of $26.49-32.84/hour, commensurate with experience
