The National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) is seeking a dedicated, energetic Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility Officer who will serve as NREL’s subject matter expert, and advisor in matters of diversity and inclusion, connecting diversity and inclusion initiatives and efforts to tangible outcomes. This position will support NREL leadership in creating and sustaining a diverse, inclusive, equitable, and accessible culture and is responsible for developing and executing key directives, projects, and initiatives aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion at NREL. This leadership role will design and implement a DEIA strategy and programs to advance NREL’s equitable and inclusive culture, create an institutional DEIA Advisory Council, champion and develop NREL’s Employee Resource Groups and partner with HR Compliance to ensure adherence to DOE and EEOC diversity and affirmative action requirements. This leader will partner across the NREL community to identify and implement training, development, programs and resources to further the workforce’s understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility topics. This position will lead NREL's DEIA program strategy and have a significant voice within NREL on strategy and future DEIA vision.
This position will focus on establishing and working towards long range goals with only consultative direction. Will provide expert direction for the advanced and impactful projects or programs reflective of NREL's DEIA focus.
This position reports to the Chief Human Resources Officer and includes regular interface with the Laboratory Director, DEIA Liaison and DEIA administrator.
The role requires residing in Colorado. A relocation package is available. This role also has weekly hybrid work options allowing the ability to work from home and the office.
Strategy and Planning
  • Design, champion and implement NREL’s diversity and inclusion strategies and metrics that drive a culture of belonging, employee engagement and cross-functional collaboration
  • Lead the annual development of NREL’s Diversity Plan
  • Advise on diversity and inclusion in recruiting and workforce development efforts
  • Partner with NREL’s executive leadership team and key stakeholders to develop and implement the Diversity and Inclusion Strategy and Plan
  • Research and remain informed on best practices related to diversity, inclusion and engagement
Partnership and Plan Execution
  • Advise and support Employee Resource Group Leaders, providing resources, to ensure maximized success
  • Partner with HR Business Partners to identify and address diversity and inclusion needs, and to identify and build targeted solutions and resources to these needs.
  • Partner with the Learning & Organization Development group by contributing to and facilitating diversity and inclusion training programs for managers, leaders, and other NREL employees
  • Review internal and external diversity and inclusion communications for appropriateness and impact, ensuring alignment with the Diversity Strategy and its objectives
  • Partner with Communications and across all functions to share information and insights across NREL
  • Partner with the Workforce Development group to plan for future talent needs
  • Lead the implementation of NREL’s People Strategy in areas of diversity and inclusion
  • Represent NREL as a diversity speaker at approved meetings and events.
  • Partner with Recruiters to implement diversity and inclusion best practices in talent sourcing, pipeline development and recruiting efforts
  • Establish a DEIA Advisory Council with Employee Resource Group leaders and other NREL leaders
Measurement and Compliance
  • Monitor and drive positive actions to continuously improve NREL diversity and inclusion measures that also ensure adherence to the Affirmative Action Plan.
  • Partner with the HR Compliance Office on the preparation, submission and execution of DEIA compliance deliverables including the Annual Diversity Plan and Affirmative Action Plan

Basic Qualifications
14 years with BS Degree; 12 years with MS Degree; 9 years with PhD; 9 years with JD
Equivalent relevant experience may be substituted for education.
  • Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Excellent written and executive-level presentation skills, including public speaking experience.
  • Masters Degree: Must have at least 12 years experience in DEIA that is relevant and directly related to this role.
  • Proven ability to seek appropriate data, analyze and identify trends, and use data and metrics to influence direction and outcomes.
  • Bachelors Degree: Must have at least 14 years experience in DEIA that is relevant and directly related to this role.
  • PhD: Must have at least 9 years experience in DEIA that is relevant and directly related to this role.
  • DEIA program design and implementation experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and influence within an organization without formal line management and authority
  • Builds effective cross-organizational teams and creates strong morale and spirit.
  • Solves variety of multi-dimensional problems in absence of guidelines or precedents.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of research & development, technical or STEM environments.
  • Extensive credentials in diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Ability to travel 3-5 times a year or as required
  • Knowledge of EEO/AAP regulations

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Professional V / Annual Salary Range: $111,600 - $200,900
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
