Job Description

The Director - Strategic Projects & Business Transformation is responsible for supporting the planning and successful implementation of BJ’s Wholesale Club’s highest-impact strategic projects. As BJ’s leadership continues to elevate and transform our company’s way of doing business, this highly visible internal consulting role is key to our long-term success.


Reporting to the VP of Strategic Projects & Business Transformation, the Director will:


  • Influence company leadership and the C-suite in making key business decisions

  • Collaborate effectively across functions to ensure our action plans reflect the input of the relevant stakeholders
  • Develop supporting materials to facilitate executive working sessions
  • Support the annual Strategic priorities setting process
  • Plan, project-manage and coordinate high-impact, cross-functional strategic programs (expect 2-3
  • Solve BJ’s toughest problems through thought-leadership and analytics
  • “Roll-up their sleeves” to augment functional teams when required to get things done


We are looking for a leader with strategic acumen, strong quantitative aptitude and senior-level communication skills who will take a structured approach to problem solving: structuring the problem at hand, developing an analytical approach, turning data into insights and insights into concrete, implementable actions that impact our business. This opportunity is ideally suited for a highly motivated general athlete with a background in Consulting or Strategic Planning. Retail/CPG experience is a plus. Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities


Project Management of cross-functional strategic initiatives:


  • Set-up meetings and working sessions to advance and govern the project
  • Identify key deliverables, activities and owners
  • Influence key stakeholders
  • Measure project progress against the plan
  • Hold functional owners accountable for advancing on their deliverables
  • Develop strong relationship with key stakeholders
  • Develop project briefs, workplans and timelines
  • Recommend and set-up project governance (e.g. coordination forums, participants)
  • Memorialize and share next steps following working sessions


Own and advance workstreams on strategic projects which may involve:


  • Developing a clear, well-supported and implementable answer to the problem at hand
  • Presenting confidently in meetings with senior leadership, turning meetings into collaborative working sessions that advance our strategic objectives
  • Conducting competitive benchmarking
  • Developing impactful communication materials (ppt/word/email) to convey recommendations to leadership
  • Mapping existing business processes
  • Validating solutions with the relevant functional stakeholders to ensure alignment
  • Identifying and clearly framing problems/questions to be answered before jumping into analysis/execution
  • Maintaining a collaborative working relationship across the business
  • Engaging senior leadership, capturing their input on the proposed approach o Performing zero-defect, world-class analysis


Support the VP of Strategic Projects & Business Transformation in the running of the

annual strategic initiatives prioritization process

Qualifications


  • High motivation, with eagerness to run the extra mile to deliver world-class results
  • Collaborative working style: openness to different points of view, empathy and good listening skills to enable fruitful collaboration with our internal clients
  • 5-7 years of experience in Strategic Business Planning function or equivalent
  • Preferred: Proficiency in Alteryx or willingness to learn
  • Strong analytical skills and comfort with manipulating large data sets
  • Demonstrable ability to frame and logically structure new or unfamiliar problems
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office package
  • Inquisitive: going beyond the immediate task at hand to identify implication, next steps or questioning the assumptions of the work / how we look at things
  • Ability to learn quickly, becoming an expert in previously unfamiliar topics
  • Advanced work-planning ability, managing work to deliver against tight deadlines. Project Management / PMO experience preferred
  • Flexibility and openness to reprioritizing work based on evolving strategic needs
  • Preferred: Proficiency with a statistical analysis software or willingness to learn
  • Insight-orientation: ability to distill data analysis down to they key messages that matter
  • Bachelors Degree Required
  • Senior consultant or Engagement Manager with at least 4 years of experience in Strategy Consulting, Management Consulting or Private Equity
  • Developed business judgement to problem-solve effectively with a senior audience and recommend actionable solutions
  • Very strong communication skills in Power-Point: ability to illustrate complex analysis and concepts in an easily accessible way that senior leadership can readily understand and act upon
