Who We Are
ILPA is the only organization dedicated exclusively to the private markets’ Limited Partner community. Representing over 600 institutions and more than $2 trillion USD of private markets assets under management, ILPA’s members include public pensions, corporate pensions, endowments, foundations, family offices, insurance companies, and sovereign wealth funds located around the world. Through its efforts in the areas of education, advocacy, standards and best practices, and networking, ILPA aims to have a direct and expanding impact on the investment returns of our members and the health of the private markets industry globally.
ILPA requires staff to be fully vaccinated, including boosters. Proof of vaccination will be required as part of the onboarding process. This will be a hybrid position, coming into the DC office on a monthly basis for at least two days. More time will be expected to be spent in the DC office during the onboarding process for in-person meetings with the supervisor.
Position Description
Key Responsibilities: The Director, Standards & Best Practices will elevate ILPA’s profile as an industry thought leader, convener and collaborator through a range of strategic initiatives. In this role, the individual is responsible for accelerating, scaling, and successfully executing on a portfolio of initiatives related to industry best practices and standards that enhance alignment of interest, governance and transparency between General Partners (GPs) and Limited Partners (LPs). This role will also play a central role in evolving ILPA’s suite of reporting templates focused on key quantitative and qualitative data needed by LPs. The Director, Standards and Best Practices will work in close collaboration with colleagues based in Toronto, CN and Washington, DC, USA. The role will be a partner to and have significant visibility with the ILPA Leadership Team, including the Chief Executive Officer. The role will also have substantial exposure to ILPA members, various committees, and a wide range of industry participants and policymakers.
Role Responsibilities
·Through ongoing dialogue with ILPA members, GPs, third parties and peer organizations, identify opportunities to create new or evolve existing ILPA standards and best practices for the benefit of ILPA’s members and industry practitioners.
·Lead efforts to drive adoption of, build coalitions around, and maximize industry engagement with ILPA-issued standards and best practices.
·Collaborate with cross-functional, internal teams to identify the highest priority industry issues and challenges worthy of ILPA’s engagement; lead efforts on creating and advise colleagues on formulating responses with scalable reach across the membership and the broader industry, e.g., policy positions, periodic surveys, industry standards and best practices, and events and educational programming.
·Manage a large and growing network of relationships with industry subject matter experts and explore vectors for collaboration.
·Lead standing and ad hoc working groups mandated to advise on developing or evolving ILPA-issued standards and best practices.
·Identify, select, and manage volunteer contributors and paid consultants as needed.
·Create and maintain resources for users of ILPA standards and respond to inbound queries regarding implementation or interpretation of ILPA-issued standards and best practices.
·Serve as an internal cross-platform resource on technical matters, including developing member- and industry-facing content and products that leverage ILPA standards and best practices.
·Serve as a face of ILPA externally through participation with press, panels, presentations, and member engagement.
·Produce training materials and process manuals related to producing and maintaining ILPA standards.
Required Qualifications
·Bachelor’s degree in business administration preferred.
·Ten+ years of professional experience.
·Seven+ years of experience within private equity.
·Preferred Designation (Not Required): Certificate in Investment Performance Measurement (CIPM), Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA), or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).
·Experience with the operational aspects of private equity highly desirable (i.e., accounting, reporting, performance benchmarking, due diligence, manager selection and oversight, legal documentation).
·Familiarity with standards in use in private equity desired (i.e., Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS), International Private Equity Valuation (IPEV), ILPA, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)).
·Familiarity with regulators that impact private equity and ILPA members desired (i.e., Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), Financial Accounting Foundation (FAF), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), and Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB)).
Preferred Skills
·Meaningful experience with private equity operations and a desire to build industry knowledge.
·Skilled in engaging and navigating multi-stakeholder situations with C-suite/senior staff internally and externally.
·In-depth experience running all elements of complex, multi-stage projects from initial stages through completion.
·Able to lead through influence and enable success without direct ownership of outcomes.
·Comfort creating and delivering engaging in-person and virtual presentations.
·Driven, energetic, and results-oriented with active intellectual curiosity.
·Team player who is highly collaborative.
·Generous, proactive, and articulate communicator internally and externally.
·High level of accountability, accuracy, efficiency, and ability to operate at an institutional level, especially while handling multiple tasks with competing deadlines.
·Process design focus, enabling consistent execution and scalability.
·Strong writing skills across different styles required for email communication, white papers, best practices guides, website updates, "client ready" materials, slide decks, and industry engagement.
·The ability to make the complex accessible to all.
