Job Description
About The Opportunity
The California Academy of Sciences offers an outstanding opportunity for a highly motivated and experienced individual to work with an energetic Development team. The Development Communications Coordinator is responsible for providing inclusive storytelling, writing, editing, and content creation support for the Development team. This position also crafts donor events and travel communications and collaborates with staff across the Academy to obtain content. This is a full-time position, reporting to the Associate Director, Development Communications, Media, and Engagement.

This position is based in San Francisco, California. Staff are currently expected to work from the Academy offices at least 2-3 times per week, which may fluctuate based on business needs. Key Responsibilities
  • Craft compelling, persuasive communications about the Academy’s strategic initiatives, exhibits, research, and programs that motivate audiences to care deeply about the Academy’s mission and participate in our donor community at various giving levels.
  • Oversee and craft Donor Events and Academy Adventures donor travel communications, including e-mail, social media, marketing, letters, and web content.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Develop and deliver high-quality multi-media (print, digital, video, web, social) resources to be used in philanthropic communications across the Development division.
  • Collaborate with staff and program managers across the Academy to obtain content and relevant information, upholding the Development team’s commitment to inclusive storytelling.
  • Maintain a consistent voice across all communications, aligned with the Academy brand.
  • Coordinate digital and web content and multimedia components for donor stewardship.
  • Provide occasional staff support for Donor Events, which may fall outside of normal business hours.
  • Write, edit, and update fundraising and stewardship materials (proposals, reports, letters, emails, and e-newsletters).
  • Serve as primary copy editor for Development collateral (e-newsletters, digital fundraising appeals, Donor Events, and Academy Adventures communications, reports, and more).
Qualifications
Experience and Education:
  • Experience managing short and long-term projects and meeting deadlines with high attention to detail.
  • Experience creating and using multimedia content for storytelling (video, photography, editing, web tools for basic design).
  • Minimum 2 years’ strong and compelling writing experience in a related field (science, the environment, journalism, education, or similar).
Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to work collaboratively across a diverse organization, both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent problem-solving, project management, and organizational skills.
  • Strong writing, editing, and verbal communications skills in English.
  • Adept at managing multiple tasks while maintaining flexibility as priorities shift.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite, Word, and Excel.
  • Interest in scientific research and education, and a passion for the Academy’s mission.
  • A willingness to request and incorporate feedback and to learn new skills.

  • Ability to transport 10 pounds.
Compensation And Benefits
Hourly hiring range: $29.81 - $32.21 per hour. Hourly rate will vary based on experience and relevant skills/knowledge set. The Academy offers a total compensation package that emphasizes both base salary and comprehensive benefits.
Schedule: Full-Time, 40 hours per week.
