About American Mattress Founded in 1988, American Mattress is a thriving midwestern mattress retail chain with approximately 85 store locations in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan and Florida. American Mattress sells mattresses as well as supplementary products such as pillows, box springs, sheets, etc. The physical locations sell primarily to retail consumers where store managers are sleep experts more than salesmen. American Mattress’s sleep experts are trained to understand the sleeping habits and preferences of their customers in order to better recommend products that result in a pleasant consumer experience.
As a family company since its founding, American Mattress puts employees first. The Company is very excited to add a new Corporate Controller to its team where the individual will have ample leeway to craft the position and department in a way they see best fit.
: The candidate will be required to perform various financial, accounting, and reporting duties for The Company under the direct supervision of management in a full-time arrangement. These duties will include journalizing daily activity, creating internal financial reports, preparing and monitoring budgets, recording business transactions, maintaining general ledger accounts, coordinating year-end tax work with outside CPA, balancing accounts, management of bank reporting requirements, coordinating payroll, reviewing the reconciliation of bank/depository accounts, modeling and monitoring cash flow of the Company, completing regular inventory audits of the Company warehouses, completing monthly sales tax returns with outside CPA, performing other tasks necessary for month-end close, and all other functions related to the financial operation of the business. The candidate must have a strong background in multi-unit retail organizations and have the experience and ability to manage a 15-person accounting, finance, and HR department.

Qualifications
Experience & Education

• Certified public accountant is a plus
• Inventory audit experience
• 5+ years of supervisory experience
• Advanced degree in accounting
• Held previous positions as a Controller or VP of Finance
• Ability to analyze accounting systems and change or implement new systems
• Previous experience working at a closely held company
• Background in the furniture or retail space
• Ability to prepare month-end accrual-based entries and financial reports
• Ability to prepare accounting work papers and close out financial statements on a monthly basis in accordance with GAAP
• Experience in Excel and STORIS ERP software
• Ability to manage a team of 15+ individuals
• Experience with Bank reporting requirements
• Demonstrated ability at implementing accounting controls
• Fundamental understanding of GAAP
• 15+ years in accounting

• Flexibility in switching between tasks, typical with a small entrepreneurial environment
• Familiar with standard concepts, practices and procedures of finance and accounting departments
