Job Description

Are you passionate about... building novel algorithms and systems to analyze and interpret the human genome ✧ working at the intersection of AI and healthcare ✧ solving hard computational problems that can enable progress in medicine and enhance our understanding of the biological world?

Join Dr. Popic’s research group at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and have fun solving 3-billion-piece puzzles every day! Our lab’s mission is to develop methods to unscramble the genomic sequence or mixture of sequences underlying the data we observe and figure out how variations in DNA sequences impact human genome diseases (such as cancer) and responses to available treatments. We build solutions that focus on scalability, sustainability, and generalizability – and involve combining new algorithmic problem formulations, with low-level system optimization, and biological insights about the problem domain. We design our tools to leverage the latest parallel computing platforms (such as the GPU and the cloud), as well as techniques from the fields of artificial intelligence and information theory.

As a computational scientist, your main focus will be to develop novel computational methods for the analysis and interpretation of large genomic datasets. The key problems we’re currently addressing include structural variant calling and genotyping, genome phasing, genome assembly, and synthetic data generation. By joining our lab, you will work in close collaboration with the large interdisciplinary community of scientists at the Broad Institute and its numerous affiliated institutions.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze a variety of large-scale genomic sequencing, graph, and image datasets
  • Communicate your research to the community via presentations and publications
  • Develop novel machine learning algorithms for key computational problems in genomics
  • Perform large-scale experiments for method evaluation and optimization
  • Implement, test, ship, and maintain high-quality open-source software tools

Requirements

  • Strong software engineering skills
  • Experience in some of the following areas: machine learning, computer vision, reinforcement learning, statistics, bioinformatics, graph theory, scientific computing, big data analytics
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks
  • A strong track record of research publications
  • Ph.D. degree in computer science, mathematics, statistics, computational biology, or a related discipline
