Job Description
Summary

Responsible for the daily operation of the city jail to ensure the welfare, safety and security of inmates and staff.

Essential Functions and Other Important Duties

Essential Functions:

  • Conducting and documenting cell checks to ensure inmate welfare and accountability;
  • Provides CPR/first aid as needed and summoning medical attention for inmates as needed;
  • Performs a variety of administrative activities including: reconciliation of incoming cash bonds, and ensuring the integrity of incoming cash funds;
  • Takes photographs and finger prints of inmates including documenting tattoos;
  • Completes TCIC/NCIC criminal histories; provides officers with warrant information;
  • Monitors the jail camera system; answering telephones handling inquiries from the public and other law enforcement agencies;
  • Prepares requests for facility maintenance;
  • Processes all incoming inmates into the city jail including completion of appropriate computerized arrest forms, biographical data, medical history, appropriate criminal charges and PREA compliance, and inputting the information into the applicable database.
  • Completes bond forms, P/R bonds, cash bonds, witnessing surety bonds, accepting and processing bond payments on virtual merchant; sending teletypes to external agencies and confirming 24 hour inmate pickups with issuing agencies;
  • Escorting inmates to and from arraignment proceedings conducted by the Municipal Judge;
  • Maintains regular and punctual on-site attendance
  • Performs a variety of activities in support of jail operations, which include: washing laundry, issuing blankets, jump suits, shoes, mats and personal hygiene items; performing cleanup of any bodily fluids or waste found in the jail environment to ensure the safety and welfare of inmates and staff in the jail.
  • Communicates with mental health agencies to facilitate and request inmate evaluations as needed;
  • Scanning e-file jail paperwork documentation for district attorney performing other related activities.
  • Prepares DCSO jail booking documents and facilitating jail transfers of Class B and higher inmate offenders;
  • Preparing arraignment and municipal court documents and assisting the municipal judges;
  • Searches incoming inmates for contraband and prior to placing them in a cell;
  • Enters excess inmate property into the property/evidence room;
  • Fingerprints members of the general public as required;
  • Administers and documents usage of all inmate prescribed medication;
  • Prepares and distributes meals for inmates in the city jail;
  • Processes inmate releases from the city jail;
  • Controls entry/exit control of the jail facility;
  • Monitors all visitors and secures them and inmates during visits;
  • Provides testimony during court proceedings as required;
  • Supervises the behavior of prisoners during booking process, holding, jail cells, and restraint chair ensuring the safety and security of the inmates and staff;

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications/Acceptable Equivalency:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent

Preferences:

Conditions of Employment:
  • Must meet the Denton Police Department’s Civilian Hiring Standards
  • Must successfully complete the employment process including a polygraph, psychological and physical examination, drug test, thorough background investigation
  • A Personal History Statement MUST be submitted within the time frame requested after initial application
  • Must attend and successfully complete the following Courses within one year of employment: Jailer Certification, CPR, First Aid, NCIC/TCIC Certifications, Cash Handling Certification, Defensive Tactics and Pepper Spray training
  • The city jail operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Applicants must be willing and available to work nights, weekends, holidays and during periods of in climate weather under potentially hazardous conditions
  • Must have a valid Class “C” Driver License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law)
