Position description

Chief, Division Liver and Pancreas Transplantation

Department of Surgery

The Department of Surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA invites applications for Chief of the Division of Liver and Pancreas Transplantation, a tenured faculty position at the Associate or Full Professor level, and the Ronald W. Busuttil, MD, PhD, and Sidney Kimmel Endowed Chair in Transplantation Surgery.

The Division of Liver and Pancreas Transplantation provides exceptional patient care, pursues breakthrough research, produces significant advances in the treatment of liver and pancreas conditions, and trains the next generation of highly accomplished surgeons. The program is one of the most established and active in the U.S., and the transplant team has performed transplants for infants, children and adults, focusing on innovative surgical techniques, advances in immunosuppressive drugs and quality patient care. Responsible for developing some of today's leading techniques, UCLA’s experts are spearheading research efforts to improve care, expand donor pools, and better manage and treat advanced liver disease .

The Division cares for all aspects of liver and hepatobiliary disease. Adult outpatient care and evaluations are performed n the Pfleger Liver Institute and for children in the Children’s Health Care clinic. Adults with cancer are treated in the Dumont-UCLA Liver Cancer Center. UCLA is one of a few programs that offers pediatric and adult care in the same facility, Ronald Reagan-UCLA Medical Center – which includes the Mattel Children’s Hospital. In addition to serving as a tertiary referral center for other transplant programs with challenging hepatobiliary cases, the Division has longstanding expertise in pancreas, intestinal, and multivisceral transplantation.

The Division Chief must be a respected active clinical surgeon in liver transplantation with a distinguished record of clinical excellence in surgery, creative research productivity, and administrative skills. Experience in Pediatric liver transplantation including Living Donor transplantation is preferable. The Division Chief must demonstrate transparency, a deep sense of professionalism, commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all its forms, an unwavering ethical compass, and strong support for interdisciplinary and interprofessional collaboration and institutional growth. The Division Chief must be committed to interdisciplinary collaboration between all team members, and is expected to work closely with adult and pediatric hepatology transplant specialists, as well as take a leadership role with other Division Chiefs and Chairs in Surgery, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. The Division Chief must also be an active participant in the Fellowship Program. It is also the responsibility of the Division Chief to work alongside the Department Chair to represent the Division in the areas of financial performance, faculty career development, research, education, and clinical care, while achieving local, regional and national visibility and prominence in the subspecialty .

Candidates must possess an M.D. degree or equivalent, be board certified in surgery and certified in abdominal transplantation and be eligible for licensure in the State of California. Candidates must also be eligible for appointment to the University of California regular professor series with a strong track record as a clinician investigator and educator including scholarly work in basic science, translational science, public health, global health or social science research. The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, bullying and other demeaning behavior, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment as well as a commitment to addressing all forms of academic misconduct, UCLA conducts targeted employment reference checks for finalists to whom departments or other hiring units would like to extend formal offers of appointment into Academic Senate faculty positions. The targeted employment reference checks involve contacting the finalists’ current and prior places of employment to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University’s Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UCLA requires all applicants for Academic Senate faculty positions to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into RECRUIT as part of their application. If the applicant does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Academic Senate faculty positions will be subject to targeted employment reference checks.
