Job Description


Powell is currently hiring a Category Manager. This position is located in Southeast Houston, Texas, at our corporate location. The Category Manager is responsible for the development and execution of sourcing strategies to leverage supplier relationships within and across the business enterprise to achieve best total value. Includes Category and or Commodity management strategies and execution, supplier relationship management, negotiation, risk management and supply base performance management. Individual is responsible for the complete range of strategic sourcing activities including spend analysis, strategy formulation, contract negotiations, and supplier quality/performance.


Essential Responsibilities


  • Minimum of 6 years purchasing experience, preferably in electrical/power component industry
  • Demonstrate accountability and knowledge on competitor analysis, market, benchmarks, legislation and drivers of their categories.
  • Working knowledge of terms and conditions is required
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Operations, Engineering or related field
  • High level of negotiation skills (tactics, techniques, strategies).
  • Develop, present, and gain approval for hedge plans and cost forecasting models.
  • Qualifications
  • Builds cost models to validate category strategies and to understand cost drivers.
  • Provide for the evaluation of supplier quotations utilizing appropriate negotiation and procurement analysis techniques and implementation of proper contracts with emphasis on quality, price, delivery, and service necessary to meet requirements.
  • Strong PC application skills including complement of Microsoft Office software.
  • Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) credentials is an advantage
  • Direct supplier selection, negotiate and interpret contracts between Powell and global suppliers.
  • Provide leadership and coordinate leveraging opportunities for Powell supply chain activities.
  • Gain knowledge of any/all regulations, statutes, and laws regarding compliance requirements on categories assigned.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively across multiple cultures and work well in a global team environment.
  • Develop and implement negotiation strategy for Capex Projects
  • Analyze global material acquisition and develop strategic plans for maximizing efficiencies and maintaining a high quality of customer service.
  • Strong planning/project management skills
  • Identify and determine strategy to implement process and tool improvements for strategic sourcing,
  • Develop and implement negotiation strategy for global materials and services
  • Provide leadership in on-going category cost reduction programs, and material inventory reduction efforts.
  • Supply chain materials solutions, including Supplier Managed Inventory and consigned stock.
  • Experience with material procurement is a must (preferably electro-mechanical components or metals)
  • Recognized as subject matter expert (SME) for assigned categories.
  • Develop, implement and execute sourcing strategies for assigned categories in alignment with business unit leaders.
  • Works closely with R&D, Engineering, and Quality to improve innovation, costand drive our overall strategy.
  • Knowledge of institutional problem-solving tools/processes such as cycle time reduction and statistical process control, process mapping and root cause analysis
  • Previous work with Oracle is an advantage
  • Experience with Cost Analysis, Financial Management / Budget management & supplier negotiation


Working Conditions


  • Typical office environment: may experience minor discomfort from extensive use of a computer display and keyboard; travel between buildings on campus and between campuses.
  • Some travel required (10-20%).
  • Temperature controlled working environment.

  • Using upper extremities to apply or exert a force up to 20 lbs.
  • Typing, punching or applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm.
  • Maintaining body equilibrium and agility to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, ascending or descending stairs.
