Position Function/Nature of Work:

Performs residential inspections and plan review regarding building construction, alterations, additions and repairs of one and two family dwellings. Work is performed under the direction of the Building Official and is reviewed annually.


Essential Duties:
The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the classification.   • Maintain files of inspections.
  • Operate City building software for the input of inspection results and other information as required.
  • Conduct field inspections of work in progress or completed projects under approved building permits for conformance with the Florida Building Code Residential and other national and local codes or ordinances.
  • Provide technical advice and consult with architects, engineers, general and specialty contractors and homeowners.
  • Perform other non-essential duties as required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to identify problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions that are in accordance with laws, ordinances, and established principles.
  • Ability to respond to various parties in a courteous and professional manner, regardless of the circumstances.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working and professional relationships with the City and other public employees, public officials, contractors, consultants, vendors, media, supervisors, co-workers, employees and the general public.
  • Knowledge of the Florida Building Code Residential.
  • Ability to answer telephones and greet the public in a friendly and courteous manner.
  • Knowledge of various types of building construction materials, methods and stages of construction in order to be able to determine when violations and defects may most easily be observed and corrected.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point.
  • Knowledge of business English, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and document styles.
  • Skill in the operation of personal computers, standard office machines and equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and to request clarification when needed.

Minimum Requirements/Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Other requirements:

  • Must be a United States citizen or naturalized citizen.
  • Must possess an honorable military discharge, if applicant has been service connected.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony.
  • Must be fluent in the English language; ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus.
  • Must possess a valid State of Florida drivers' license.
  • Must endure a personal, professional and moral background investigation to determine honesty, maturity and dependability.
  • Must pass a physical examination and drug urinalysis test.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • One and Two Family Dwelling Inspector
