Automation Engineer Jobs

Designs, selects, tests, installs, monitors, modifies, and maintains safe and reliable instrumentation, and process automation systems for new and existing facilities. Utilizes process automation systems (PAS) including process control systems (PCS), safety instrumented systems (SIS)/instrumented protective systems (IPS), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems and associated applications. Optimizes instrumentation and process automation system integrity and reliability, safety, and efficiency.
Supports clients/customers and assists with functional projects under regular supervision. Has a general knowledge of the work function.

• Work independently or with others as a team to complete assigned projects
• Preventative Maintenance and Monitoring of control systems
• Specify equipment and obtain price quotations for new or replacement projects
• Record data and generate computer reports and process written records on a timely basis
• Work closely with site I&E to troubleshoot instrumentation issues.
• Design control system modifications to existing facilities and complete management of change (MOC) forms to initiate installation
• Awareness of new technical developments and ability of applying new knowledge to the control systems in place at REG
• Work closely with the board operators and process team to identify and implement improvements
• Follow safety procedures in plant operations and encourage others to do the same
• Ability to use office equipment (computer, copy machine, calculator, etc)
• Prepare budget capital cost and justification for use in project planning
• Base tuning and control improvements
• Provide owner’s automation support for new plant development during front end engineering design, detailed engineering, procurement, and plant commissioning
• Support turnaround activities in Geismar
• Participate in DCS, PLC, and SIS software/hardware upgrades.

• Support OTS (Operator Training Simulator) environment.
• Investigate SIS and BPCS trips for cause identification and improvements
• Provide guidance to Maintenance and Reliability for Preventative Maintenance tasks
• Support units during turnarounds
• Support Virtual Control System Environment
• General knowledge of design standards and regulations
• Troubleshooting instrumentation, DCS (Distributed Control Systems), PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers) or SIS (Safety Instrumented Systems) issues
• Perform other duties as assigned
• Disciplined self-starter with good organizational skills
• Management of backup processes
• Support disaster recovery efforts, network management, and new OT initiatives and existing OT processes
• Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles
• Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing to provide technical expertise
• Patching of DCS, PLC and SIS environments
• Demonstrate attention to detail
• Review control system designs by outside contractors for conformance to specifications and technology
• Assist in the development and evaluation of manuals as necessary
• Represent CREG at technical conferences and events as well as training on different control systems
• Manage multiple tasks simultaneously and in a timely manner to meet deadlines

• Participate in alarm management reviews

• Strong organization skills
• 4 year bachelor’s degree – Electrical, Computer Engineering, or related degree
• Strong technical background
• Advanced Excel skills
• 0 - 5 years in a process-related industry as a control systems engineer with exposure to operational technology topics.
• Low voltage electrical understanding and troubleshooting skills
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Extensive math and basic financial analysis abilities
• Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Project, Visio)

• System topology design knowledge (DeltaV or Allen-Bradley Preferred)
• PLC and HMI (software/hardware) knowledge (Allen-Bradley Preferred)
• Experience with TCP/IP network infrastructure with experience on industrial networks.
• SIS (software/hardware) knowledge (DeltaV Preferred)
• Working knowledge of the Safety Lifecycle
• DCS (software/hardware) knowledge (DeltaV Preferred)
• Experience with virtual environments. (Hyper-V or vSphere Preferred)

• Requires good general physical ability to move freely throughout facilities. Extended periods of time walking, standing and other physical activities related to achieving job responsibilities. Good vision and hearing, corrected to normal for managing operations for safety in job functions.
