Job Description

Associate Director of Development, Heart and Vascular Institute

Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins’ focus on research, teaching and patient care, and its role as a national and global leader in higher education. We create and foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine; strengthening the institution through partnerships with donors, alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and patients.


Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which includes four different work modalities. This role has a hybrid work arrangement with an onsite presence of 3 days per week. The manager will confirm the team’s core onsite days where the majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees who travel on university business can count those days towards their onsite days.


The Associate Director of Development of the Johns Hopkins Heart and Vascular Institute will work with the Director of Development in the management of private sector fundraising to support the research, patient care and education missions of the Johns Hopkins Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI), which encompasses the Divisions of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery. Develop and implement HVI donor pipeline strategies, activities and prospect engagement. Spearhead activity and strategies to upgrade donors to higher giving levels. Cultivate, solicit and steward leadership annual gifts and select major gifts from grateful patients and other interested parties. Train and support a core portfolio of faculty members to identify potential donors and strategize personalized approaches for funding. Work closely with the Director of Development to manage and staff selected HVI development events as well as provide oversight for HVI communications and group annual giving and stewardship strategies. Travel is required.



SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct 70 or more virtual or in-person visits or substantive prospect actions each year, managing a portfolio of approximately 110 prospects.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Prepare proposals, solicitation letters and communications materials for potential prospects and donors. Plan and implement targeted messaging through the use of online marking platforms, in collaboration with the Department of Medicine’s Assistant Director of Stewardship.
  • Provide primary development support to faculty in targeted cardiovascular service lines. Staff 15-20 core faculty members and additional faculty as needed to train and advise them on best practices for growing their donor portfolios. Solicit and secure contributions on their behalf.
  • Participate in HVI development meetings, joint meetings and with the Department of Medicine Development staff, and meetings and trainings for Johns Hopkins Development and Alumni Relations and the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of all development procedures for Johns Hopkins Development and Alumni Relations, Johns Hopkins Medicine, and the Johns Hopkins Heart and Vascular Institute.
  • Assist Director of Development in coordination and implementation of advisory board activity and volunteer engagement opportunities.
  • Work closely with the Director of Development to identify, qualify, retain and steward high-end annual giving and major gift prospects, with a particular focus on donors of $25,000 and above. Initiate gift strategies, cultivate and solicit prospects through personal and virtual visits and written communications.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the research, teaching, and patient care activity of the Johns Hopkins Medicine’s Divisions of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery and their integrated roles within the Departments of Medicine and Surgery.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Development and the Office of Medical Annual Giving, spearhead the review, editing and approval of HVI annual giving solicitations and prospect mailing lists. Develop HVI annual gift strategies and created timelines and content for special mailings, email, video and crowdfunding solicitations to qualify, solicit and secure new high-end annual giving.
  • Manage or participate in development related events as assigned such as professorship dedications, lectureships, board meetings, donor receptions, and dinners.


The Associate Director of Development must possess effective relationship building and communication skills, be highly organized, have strong oral, written, editorial and analytical skills, and be capable of developing solid relationships with faculty, staff, patients, donors, and colleagues. The Associate Director must have significant development experience including personal solicitation of five and six-figure prospects, and be willing to participate in all aspects of the program’s fundraising efforts that include personal and virtual visits, direct mail, and events. The Associate Director must be a self-starter, able to manage several projects simultaneously, and understand the need to re-evaluate priorities on a regular basis to flourish in a fast-paced environment. The Associate Director must be a cooperative, collegial individual who enjoys working with diverse populations.





Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Three years related experience, with at least two years of professional experience



Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience and comfort working with diverse groups of constituents, including donors, faculty, and staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, Experience with social media and online giving and donor stewardship platforms preferred.
  • Ability to operate independently and as part of a team in a hybrid work environment, working effectively and efficiently from the hospital, home and other locations.
  • High degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Skill in independently managing and prioritizing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability and comfort working in a fast-paced complex organization that puts a strong emphasis on metrics and success.
  • Strong computer literacy skills required and the ability to learn new software.
  • Ability and willingness to travel and work occasional evening or weekend hours as needed.
