Job Description

Educational Programs and Services (EPS) is home to departments and programs that are central to the educational mission of the Stanford University School of Medicine.We serve all populations of students and trainees who participate in the School's programs: Stanford MD, MS, MSPA, and PhD students; visiting MD students seeking clinical clerkships; postdoctoral scholars and medical fellows; and medical practitioners seeking further professional enrichment. Our goal is to provide a Stanford School of Medicine experience worthy of our students' and trainees' talents, aspirations, and dedication.


Department Information


The Stanford Medicine Teaching and Mentoring Academy is an inclusive, school-wide entity available to all those who teach and mentor our trainees – MD students, PhD students, residents, fellows, postdoctoral scholars and faculty. The Academy is a unique organization that spans the spectrum of education and advances the mission of the School of Medicine at all levels including education, research, and clinical care.


Job Purpose


The Stanford Medicine Teaching and Mentoring Academy is seeking an Associate Director for Evaluation and Scholarship to work under the direction of faculty or other management to implement and administer the vision, strategy, and goals of the assigned academic entity/program(s).


This position will be based on the Stanford campus and will be considered for an option of telecommuting from the Bay Area (hybrid of working 2-3 days on-site), subject to operational need.


Core Duties


  • Represent the program or function as the key contact and subject matter expert within the department, unit or school and develop communications for internal and external constituencies. Organize and/or participate in outreach activities such as events, partnerships, training, and conferences. Lead workshops and facilitate meetings.
  • Teach and/or assist in the teaching and administration of courses. Create and/or advise in the development of curriculum. Make recommendations for course improvements.
  • Write and edit content for reports, peer-reviewed publications, and other program activities under the general direction of program director. Assist with the administration of innovation grants, (i.e., supporting grant writers and grantees).
  • Collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends to determine program effectiveness; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program.
  • Oversee and administer research activities by evaluating academic programs, making recommendations that impact policies and programs, and coordinating and implementing changes.
  • May oversee and train student workers.


Education & Experience (Required)



Bachelor’s degree and two years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience. Advanced degree may be required for some programs. Program administration and or research experience may be required.


Knowledge, Skills And Abilities (Required)


  • Demonstrated oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
  • Ability to oversee and provide basic direction to staff.


Desired Qualifications


  • Fluency in terminology, research, and recommendations around inclusive and equitable pedagogy, interest in learning more, and exhibition of inclusive and equitable behaviors towards TMA and campus colleagues.
  • Analytical and organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks, especially complex projects with multiple deadlines.
  • Two or more years of experience as a primary instructor, that is, someone responsible for design and delivery of courses.
  • PhD or demonstrated knowledge of expertise in educational research design including qualitative and quantitative research skills.
  • Clear oral and written communication skills that demonstrate awareness of audience, professionalism, and inclusivity.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams and take the initiative, especially on new ventures or with ambiguous projects.


Physical Requirements


  • Rarely sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.
  • Occasionally use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to use voice to present information/communicate with others.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • On-campus mobility.


Working Conditions


  • May travel locally.

The expected pay range for this position is $51,400 to $92,200 per annum.


Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
