Associate Development Scientist - Isolation & Purification

Bayer U.S. LLC's Berkeley, CA, office seeks an Associate Development Scientist – Isolation & Purification to be responsible for providing expertise in development of manufacturing processes for purifying biopharmaceuticals. Will also: (i) independently design and perform experiments, assays, or procedures with considerable complexity requiring planning, execution, and analysis based on in-depth operational and scientific knowledge ; (ii) recommend and implement advanced technology to improve process development efficiency (e.g. robotic liquid handlers for automated high-throughput process development, predictive statistical and mechanistic models for computer-based process development, and data management system); (iii) write and review technical documents (e.g. lab notebooks, SOPs, internal reports, regulatory documents); ( iv) coordinate departmental/interdepartmental projects and interpret/communicate complex scientific findings; and (v) collaborate with external academic and industry partners to evaluate innovative technology to improve process development efficiency.

Must have a bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent degree) in Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, or Chemistry plus two (2) years of experience in a related biopharmaceutical process development/manufacturing position.

Must also have any experience with or knowledge of: (i) planning, executing, and analyzing centrifugation, depth filtration, chromatography (affinity, ion exchange, hydrophobic, mixed mode), viral filtration, and ultrafiltration/diafiltration experiments to purify biopharmaceuticals at bench and pilot scale; (ii) AKTA Avant and Ready workstations; (iii) HPLC, ELISA, SDS-PAGE, CE, DLS and SoloVPE analytical techniques; (iv) LIMS, ELN, and Microsoft Office; (v) statistical experimental design (DoE) and data analysis using JMP; (vi) lab automation (e.g. programming Tecan liquid handling system for automated high-throughput screening); (vii) database construction and analysis; (viii) writing technical documents; and (ix) GLP, GMP, QbD, scale-up, tech transfer, process development and optimization, process characterization and validation.

Experience can be concurrent.

Employees can expect to be paid a salary between $102,044 to $111,453. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission (if relevant). Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc.. The offered salary may vary within this range based on an applicant’s location, market data/ranges, an applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.
