Job Description
The School of Social Work is seeking an Assistant research Scientist/Engineer.


The School of Social Work and the Center for Public Health Evaluation and Research has an excellent opportunity for a lead program evaluator. We are hiring an Assistant Research Scientist/Engineer.


In this role, you will be responsible for leading a team of program evaluators and data analysts tasked with providing data collection, analysis, and reporting of outcomes and performance measures for public health initiatives. This is a full time, grant funded, benefits eligible opportunity.


The Center for Public Health Evaluation and Research is administratively located within National Resource Center for Family Centered Practice in The University of Iowa School of Social Work. The Center offers many resources to help you maintain work-life balance through your changing needs and life situations. To help you be successful, you will have access to the larger university, as well as training and support locally and through our National Center.


The Assistant Research Scientist will maintain relationships with clients and funders while conducting specialized scientific research and evaluation, and will secure ongoing funding while carrying out research and evaluation projects. Duties will include performing research and evaluation, theoretical investigations; analyzing data; and disseminating research findings to various programmatic partners. This position will have the ability to focus on a range of projects and there is some flexibility in terms of what specific projects the Assistant Research Scientist position will take on. The Center has active evaluation projects in the areas of chronic disease prevention and control, violence prevention and response, mental health, substance use and co-occurring disorders, food security, housing, and youth development. There is also opportunity to develop new areas of research and evaluation including funding streams and partnerships.


Key Responsibilities


  • Analyze data for relevance and data integrity.
  • Contribute to documentation of equipment and procedures.
  • Perform experiments, simulations, or theoretical investigations.
  • Collect data and evaluate relevance of data.
  • Compare results of scientific investigations to previously published work
  • Oversee basic data analysis techniques.
  • Work independently on basic research tasks with oversight by Faculty or Principal Investigator (PI).

Education Required


  • Ph.D. in public health, program evaluation and measurement, social work, or closely related field.


Required Qualifications


  • Experience with grant/contract writing, submitting grants to funders and completing funded projects.
  • Experience in research and program evaluation with human subjects research certification or ability to obtain certification.
  • Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with evaluation and research partners from different disciplines, agencies and non-academic sectors.
  • Strong oral communication skills both in terms of internal/organizational communication with peers and coworkers as well as external facilitation and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to enter, organize, manipulate, and analyze data.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to meet University of Iowa Fleet Services standards and occasionally travel overnight.
  • Demonstrated written communication skills for both academic and lay audiences.


Desired Qualifications


  • Experience and educational preparation in statistics and data management (e.g., methodology, measurement, and analysis; biostatistics, social science, or health statistics).
  • Experience using qualitative and quantitative statistical software packages (e.g., SPSS, R, Stata, AMOS, SAS, PowerBI, MaxQDA, Dedoose).
  • Familiarity and knowledge of state and federal systems such as public health/social service/education delivery systems and issues relevant to Iowa.
