Job Description
General Summary:


The Assistant Provost for Community & Executive Education (CEE) leads UMass Boston’s efforts to create, expand, and bring to market non-credit learning opportunities. As part of the university’s mission to increase access to education for all, the Assistant Provost collaborates with internal colleges and departments to identify non-credit courses and micro-credentialing programs that will appeal to adult learners in the public and private sectors.


This is a role for an entrepreneurial individual capable of honing in on potential, connecting the right people to pilot an approach, and combing the data to know when success is achieved.


UMass Boston has seven academic colleges with the resources to provide non-credit education and is located in a metropolitan area with countless corporate, government, and nonprofit entities. The Assistant Provost’s charge is to catalyze opportunities for upskilling, micro-credentialing, and pioneering of non-credit programs to fill the knowledge and skills gaps in the community and beyond. Metrics for success include increasing non-credit enrollment, coordinating the buildout of additional non-credit offerings, and forging educational provider partnerships with businesses and nonprofits. Fast-paced, data-informed iteration is the name of the game.


The Assistant Provost reports to the university’s Provost and remains in close contact with college deans and assistant deans, directors of the university’s centers and institutes, and the university’s marketing division.


Examples of Duties:


  • Manages the unit’s budget.
  • Establishes goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and action plans for Community and Executive Education operations and adult initiatives that are consistent with the unit, division, and university strategic plans.
  • Supports institutional effectiveness goals.
  • Maintains effective communication with administration, faculty and staff.
  • Oversees self-supporting, non-credit, and affiliate partnership programs and acts as the programs manager of budgets, enrollment, and scheduling.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.
  • Establishes and monitors direct reports’ performance and development goals, sets objectives and priorities, conducts frequent coaching and annual performance appraisals.
  • Serves as primary contact for educational and business partners both internal and external to UMass Boston.
  • Provides oversight and direction for the planning, organization, and leadership of Community and Executive Education fiscal accountability, and program support.
  • Performs related duties as required or deemed appropriate to support the accomplishment of the responsibilities and functions of Continuing Education.
  • Collaborates with UMass Boston academic colleges and administrative units to determine resource availability for non-degree-seeking students with an emphasis on adults who have a desire to enhance their skills through professional development offerings.
  • Works closely with appropriate campus divisions to develop and implement effective marketing and outreach strategies.
  • Establishes relationships and networks with local, regional, national, and international organizations, chambers, and educational partners focused on workforce development and career pathways.
  • Leads a collaborative annual operational planning process to include the creation of an annual report and an organizational business plan.
  • Collaborates with UMass Boston academic colleges to create internal linkages between non-credit and credit-bearing courses, certificates, and programs.
  • Recruits, supervises, and evaluates faculty and personnel in Community and Executive Education.
  • Supervises and directs required reporting to state and national agencies.


Qualifications:


Advanced graduate degree required, doctorate preferred. At least five (5) years of experience managing some form of educational program delivery required. Experience managing complex budgets, networking with industry and nonprofit leaders, and overseeing pilot programs preferred. Knowledge of the Boston Area corporate, nonprofit, and government landscape preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience implementing and adapting best organizational practices for non-credit education
  • Talent to forge effective working relationships with various departments and groups across campus; work independently and as part of a team; has a collaborative attitude
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit and secure multi-year organizational/agency agreements to provide university-based non-credit educational offerings and programs
  • Working knowledge of CMS/CRM systems related to career services, such as Salesforce or Handshake
  • Working knowledge of SIS/CRM such as Slate
  • Creative and innovative mindset

  • Ability successfully write and manage externally-sponsored grants and awards
