The Assistant Director will supervise and manage operations of the Fitness and Wellness program in the Campus Recreation Center and other sites as needed.


This is an in-office position located in Stephenville, Texas with normal work hours of Monday to Friday; from 8 AM to 5PM or as business needs indicate. This position requires a flexible work schedule which at times will require frequent attendance during evenings, weekends and some holidays. Additional hours may be required during peak periods. Must be able to work remotely at the request of the University.


Job Duties And Responsibilities


25% Hiring/Training:


  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate Fitness Graduate Assistant, and approximately 20 student staff, including but limited to, group exercise instructors, and personal trainers
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to teamwork, customer service, ethical leadership and continuing education that supports the department's mission, vision, and values
  • Oversee all group exercise classes, specialty and pop-up fitness classes, fitness assessments, and personal training sessions
  • Coordinate practicums and internships and continue to bridge the gap between academic departments and Campus Recreation
  • Develop and implement monthly continuing education in-services for group exercise instructors and personal training staff


20% Accounting & Statistics:


  • Prepare, administer, and report semester and annual program evaluations and assessments
  • Purchase appropriate equipment and supplies
  • Work with computer software applications including word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation, internet, recreation management, and email
  • Approve staff time and ensure compliance with payroll and purchasing processes
  • Maintain statistical information regarding programs and interpret exercise assessment data
  • Plan, prepare and manage program budget including overseeing income projections and monitoring year to year comparisons


10% Promotion:


  • Strong customer service skills and phone and email etiquette
  • Collaborate with Marketing to develop posters, fliers, social media, and videos to promote programs and educate students on health and wellness topics
  • Develop Fit for Hire and other outreach services to attract different users
  • Update the website with program information
  • Propose, market, and host special events geared towards fitness and wellness twice a year


25% Risk Management and Safety:


  • Ensure compliance of staff with industry standard safety and risk management practices, facility and equipment inspections, and established Campus Recreation policies and procedures
  • Acquire American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor certification within first year of employment


10% Professional Development:


  • Membership in University/Student Engagement and Success Committees and attendance at Campus Recreation staff meetings and other related activities
  • Attend and participate in conference/workshops related to the field of recreation and related fields
  • Ability to develop and maintain collaborative, supportive, and professional working relationships in an inclusive environment


10% Other:


  • This position requires a flexible work schedule which at times will require frequent attendance during evenings and weekends. Additional hours may be required during peak periods
  • Other duties as assigned
  • In accordance with the Division of Student Engagement and Success/Department of Campus Recreation Strategic Plan, other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications


  • Ability and willingness to occasionally work evening and weekend hours
  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreation or Sports Management, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of six years of professional work experience within the fitness industry or related field.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Skill in developing and implementing risk management protocols
  • Additional certifications or experience in fitness and wellness areas such as Registered Dietician
  • Certified Personal Trainer through American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), and/or American Council on Exercise (ACE)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Health Education, Recreation, Sport Management, Higher Education, or related field
  • Certified Group Fitness Instructor through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), American Council on Exercise (ACE), and/or Aerobics & Fitness Association of America (AFAA)
  • Minimum 1-year full time experience in Higher Education


Current CPR, AED, First Aid and Blood Borne Pathogens certifications or ability to obtain within 90 days


  • Experience in supervision of personnel and participants, purchasing processes, and payroll management
  • Texas Driver’s License or ability to obtain within 30 days


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Knowledge of recreation program management.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
