Job Description

General Summary:

Assists the Vice President & Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) in the executive-level management of nursing resources, strategic planning, and development and administration of nursing policies and procedures which support the organization’s mission and vision. Has operational and functional responsibilities for a service line or identified group of patient care areas and/or special projects or initiatives. Provides oversight of assigned areas that assures focus on patient-centered care and compliance with the requirements of licensing, regulatory, and accrediting bodies, and fosters staff training, growth, and retention. Supervises assigned Unit Senior Directors/Managers and other nurse program leaders.


  • Experience with nursing policy and procedure development, including thorough understanding of the Joint Commission standards and CMS and regulatory requirements;
  • Significant operations experience with a focus on quality of patient care and client satisfaction;
  • Superb leadership skills and proven focus on nursing staff development;
  • Proven experience working with patients and diagnoses associated with assigned service line(s)/area(s);
  • Requires Master's degree in Nursing or appropriate area plus 5-7 years of progressively more responsible clinical care experience, including at least 3 years of management experience. Experience must include:
    • at least two years in an inpatient psychiatric hospital environment;
    • proven experience working with patients and diagnoses associated with assigned service line(s)/area(s);
    • experience with nursing policy and procedure development, including thorough understanding of the Joint Commission standards and CMS and regulatory requirements;
    • strong skills in developing and implementing performance improvement initiatives;
    • significant operations experience with a focus on quality of patient care and client satisfaction;
    • superb leadership skills and proven focus on nursing staff development;
    • experience in achieving effective staff problem resolution and partnership with Human Resources.

  • Position requires problem-solving and conceptual skills to determine optimum patient care requirements, maximize the utilization of resources, and identify and supervise performance improvement initiatives.
  • Work meeting deadlines, responding promptly to critical organizational and functional issues, and managing the demands of multiple projects very frequently (51-80% of work time) produces a great deal of mental/visual stress and fatigue.
  • A very high level of interpersonal skills is required of this position to provide leadership and direction to assigned service line(s)/areas; to interact effectively with the medical staff; to work with and/or chair task forces and committees; and to facilitate team building.
  • Must possess current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland at the time of appointment and continuously while in position.
