The VP, Media Engineering will lead the Media Engineering organization, building platforms and features to delight customers. This role will be responsible for partnering with 84.51° teams to lead all strategic, tactical, and operational aspects of building solutions to support the 84.51° strategy. The successful candidate will be an innovative, forward thinking technology leader with a relentless focus on inspiring teams to deliver high-quality and scalable solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain a world-class engineering organization by hiring and retaining exceptional talent
  • Role model Servant Leadership, making leadership excellence a continuous priority for your own personal development and that of your teams
  • Enable, via best practices in software design & architecture, transformation of tech footprint from on-premises assets to core capabilities and modern applications that run on the public cloud
  • Identify trends and promote solutions leveraging software architecture best practices, including quality, supportability, scalability, performance, availability, maintainability, extensibility, and security
  • Drive transparency and decision making through the product and engineering leadership team with blameless postmortems and iterative improvement programs that focus on product scale and quality
  • Lead by example, strengthening our culture of innovation, diversity and inclusion, customer focus, operational excellence, and continued process improvement
  • Develop and implement an engineering performance model that includes metrics & measurement for continuous improvement
  • Work closely with product & engineering leadership to set standards around patterns, frameworks, technologies, and processes to promote a simple and consistent approach across multiple types of services
  • Build relationships with key partners within the Kroger Technology organization to share best practices, help accelerate the growth of both organizations, and deliver joint initiatives as appropriate
  • Champion an engineering culture that fosters innovation, quality, scalability, reliability, customer trust and development velocity
  • Develop, champion, and drive the engineering strategic vision and product roadmap to deliver against the 84.51° media strategy. Articulate, influence, and build alignment on technical solutions
  • Provide timely feedback, career guidance, address underperformance, and recognize the individual strengths and contributions of your team members
  • Provide organizational and technical leadership across broad technical areas including distributed systems, data platform, reporting and analytics

Minimum qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with fast growing organizations and a track-record of both aggressively growing leaders from within, while recruiting to fill gaps when internal candidates are not a fit
  • Significant experience managing change and realizing efficiency from mergers, acquisitions and consolidations
  • Effectively communicate complex topics to groups with differing levels of technology expertise
  • Flexible management style with a primary approach of coaching and enabling strong engineering teams, while at the same time being able to engage directly when urgency is needed or teams are stalled
  • Highly empathetic, collaborative, no-ego approach to leadership
  • Great collaborative interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication, and listening skills
  • An ownership mentality: You possess a natural tendency to take initiative
  • Strong technical background that includes cloud technologies, distributed systems, web technologies, contemporary data technologies
  • Deep understanding and commitment to software engineering principles/processes (e.g., Lean, Agile, DevOps, CI/CD, TDD, XP) and continuous improvement through measurement
  • Experience building large, complex systems, particularly web services, RESTful APIs, and microservice architectures with emphasis on industry best practices
  • Proven experience building, managing, and motivating a diverse distributed team of software architects, engineers, and QA teams, responsible for developing and deploying a scalable technology platform in a hybrid-hosted ecosystem
  • A bias for action: You like to move quickly, and are always iterating on ideas
  • Success with engineering operational excellence, including availability, cost, and performance
  • Demonstrated experience of promoting culture and diversity throughout a large engineering organization to achieve transformational change

Preferred qualifications:

  • Proven track record in building and scaling multi-channel advertising platforms
  • Previous experience being part of a Technology Leadership team and reporting into CIO/CTO
  • Experience in negotiating and managing large-scale vendor agreements
  • Relevant certifications in technology and/or project management
  • Experience building SaaS products
  • Experience running a 24x7 high-availability platform

Years of Experience:

  • 15+ years (20+ preferred) of progressive technology experience, with 10+ years in a leadership function

Education:

  • Masters / Bachelors degree required in Computer Science or equivalent experience
