The Vice President of Software Engineering is responsible for leading the teams that design, build, deploy and maintain software in support of T-Mobile’s digital strategy and business objectives. They are deeply technical and can demonstrate excellence in SDLC, ideally developed through their experience working in at least one major technology (FAANG) company. Their most valuable skills will be in developing world-class digital products and experiences using the latest technologies and techniques.
In addition to their outstanding technical leadership, the ideal candidate will be comfortable with agile methodologies and should be fully conversant with both Scrum and SAFe so that they can demonstrate hands-on experience of leading effective agile software engineering and product development teams in a large (Fortune 100), complex, matrix-managed organization.
An exceptional people leader, this person will also relish building teams and creating a culture of consistent, quality delivery as a servant leader who leads and inspires other with their own technical skills.
They will value face-to-face interaction with their team and their key stakeholders and enjoy working in close collaboration with peers from design, marketing, and product backgrounds to successfully deliver high-quality software products that surprise and delight stakeholders. This will include all T-Mobile digital apps.
They will report directly to the EVP & Chief Digital Officer as a critical member of the Digital Leadership Team (DLT) and will be based in T-Mobile’s Bellevue or Overland Park offices with regular travel as necessary.
- Develop deep partnerships across the Digital Leadership Team and cross-functional peers to ensure that velocity and quality for software engineering teams meets the expectations of key stakeholders.
- Recruit, mentor, motivate and develop a highly engaged, innovative, and customer-centric software engineering organization with a strong pipeline of talent, and excellent SDLC discipline.
- Responsible for ensuring the Quality Engineering and testing best practice is fully embedded into all engineering activities.
- Has good control of planning, staffing, budgeting, managing expense priorities, and recommending and implementing changes to methods and tools for all aspects of software engineering and SDLC. Understands the importance of timely resourcing and works closely with colleagues in portfolio and program roles to ensure that Scrum teams are adequately resourced, acting as a ‘guild leader’ for all software engineering across the company.
- Create and propagate a culture of software excellence based on industry best practice as seen in Silicon Valley (e.g., Test Driven Development, Pair Programming, eXtreme Programming). Lead by example through their own personal excellence in software engineering. Be able to assess and review code and drive standards. Will be a thought-leader in CI/CD, branch-based development and DevOps and drive the adoption of best-practice across the whole SDLC.
- Also responsible for other Duties/Projects as assigned by business management as needed.
- Strong focus on cybersecurity.
- 10 + years hands-on experience of designing and building software for digital experiences and products that deliver high-quality experiences to customers and end-users.
- Familiarity with the full stack of software engineering covering native app development, web development and back-end integrations.
- 10 + years CI/CD, Cloud, trunk-based development, and DevOps
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or similar required. Master’s Degree preferred.
- 10 + years’ experience working in a business with a diverse portfolio offering across multiple lines of business to large consumer and / or business segments with large scale audiences.
- 10 + years leading and managing large a software engineering function (250+ people) with a broad range of experiences from entry-level engineers to principal level engineers.
- Significant experience in world-class software engineering (10 -15 years) in major brands that have digital audiences of more than 100m people.
- Ability to quickly translate from business requirements and experience designs into working software embracing innovation and best practice in SDLC. Able to move beyond ‘requirements’ to collaborative problem-solving with stakeholders.
- Must have a natural affinity for and preference to working in Scrum, with excellent disciplines around backlog management, working with product owners and leading teams through estimating and burn-down activities.
- Has experience working with data and contextual platforms to deliver personalized or contextualized products and experiences geared around multi-faceted customer relationships. Deep expertise in native app development, and web development.
- Must be curious about new technologies, frameworks, and systems, and always be exploring new ways to tackle problems and to drive better software outcomes.
